What Flemington Races
Where Flemington Racecourse – 448 Epsom Rd, Flemington VIC 3031
When Saturday, July 16, 2022
First Race 12pm AEST

Racing heads back to Flemington on Saturday afternoon for what promises to be a competitive nine-race card. Despite the lack of black-type events, there looks to be plenty of talent going around through the meeting, with a few looking to make their mark heading into the spring. The track is rated a Heavy 8, the rail is out 4m for the entire circuit, and the first race at HQ is set to jump at midday.

Best Bet at Flemington – Mimi’s Award

We were with the Ben & JD Hayes-trained Mimi’s Award when she was first across the line the Banjo Patterson Series Final on July 2, before the mare had the win sensationally taken off her in the stewards room. The four-year-old continually kept coming away from the rail and interfered with eventual winner Monbaher over the final 300m. There is little doubt in our mind that if she had run straight, she would have kept her rival at bay and won the race regardless. There is not much different about this race compared her last start, and from barrier seven, Daniel Stackhouse should have her settled midfield with cover. With 54kg on her back, it will only benefit her chances of rounding her rivals once again.

Next Best at Flemington – Squid Game

One of our better bets of the day comes up in the opening leg of the quaddie when the Patrick Payne-trained Squid Game steps out over 1000m. He finished three lengths off Inundation (who has subsequently flopped as a $1.30 favourite) last time out, and the start prior he managed to go within 1.5 lengths of the progressive Passive Aggressive. Those two runners would both be short odds-on in a race like this. Having drawn the middle of the pack, Craig Williams will need luck at a certain point inside the final 400m, but Squid Game has a bit on his rivals here – especially with how well weighted he is. The $2.40 on offer looks to be a nice little bank builder.

Best Value at Flemington – The Gauch

Having his first start for the Peter Moody stable is The Gauch. He has always been touted as an above-average sprinter, so the $34 on offer with online bookmakers is a ridiculous price. He was certainly in need of the run at Sandown on June 11, but considering he is five weeks between runs and a horse that boasts a near-bombproof record second-up (3: 2-1-0), he looks to be a great value play. With race favourite and expected leader Bill The Boxer drawn directly inside of him, look for Luke Nolen to stalk that runner wherever he goes. If The Gauch is anywhere near his best, he should be fighting out the finish.

Race 9 – Silk #5 The Gauch (13)
