MAJOR RACES HELD AT FLEMINGTON

Flemington is home to the Melbourne Cup Carnival. This carnival takes place in the Spring and consists of four race days within a week. It consists of multiple Group 1 racing events which attract some of the best horses in Australia and abroad.

The most famous of these Group 1 events is the $7,750,000 Melbourne Cup (3200m). There is no bigger event on the Australian racing calendar than this event, the race that stops the nation.

The Melbourne Cup was first run in 1861 where it was won by New South Wales galloper Archer. Some of the biggest names of the Australian turf have also won this race including Phar Lap, Think Big, Let’s Elope, Subzero, Saintly, Might And Power, and Makybe Diva who won the race a record three times.

The race was first won by an international visitor in 1993 by the Dermot Weld-trained Vintage Crop. Weld also came back in 2002 to win the race again with Media Puzzle.

Another historical Melbourne Cup victory was that of Prince of Penzance in 2015 who won at 100-1 for jockey Michelle Payne who became the first female jockey to win the great race.

Other major Group 1 events run during the Melbourne Cup Carnival include the Victoria Derby (2500m), Victoria Oaks (2500m), Mackinnon Stakes (2000m), Cantala Stakes (1600m), Myer Classic (1600m), and Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).

Other Group 1 events that are run at Flemington race track during the Spring in lead-up to carnival week are the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).

Flemington hosts multiple Group 1 events during the Melbourne Autumn Carnival as well. These include the Australian Guineas (1600m), Newmarket Handicap (1200m), and Australian Cup (2000m).

Flemington is also one of three hosts of the $5,000,000 All-Star Mile which is run in Melbourne every Autumn.
