Flemington race-by-race preview

What All-Star Mile Day 2025
Where Flemington Racecourse – Melbourne, Victoria
When Saturday, March 1, 2025
First Race 12:05pm AEDT

The All-Star Mile (1600m) and Newmarket Handicap (1200m) headline one of Melbourne’s premier Group 1 racedays this Saturday at Flemington. Clear skies and a top of 32 degrees are forecast, and with the rail out 5m for the entire circuit, it will be pristine conditions both above and on the ground. The first of 10 races on All-Star Mile Day 2025 commences at 12:05pm AEDT.

Race 1: Cirka Plate (1100m)

Let’sfacethemusic was sent to Kilmore for an easy kill in a maiden on February 21 and duly saluted. In the spring, the son of I Am Invincible finished on the heels of Band Of Brothers in Group 3 company, and the fact he was still a maiden leading into this campaign was surprising. He stays at 1100m and will likely stalk the speed, and with a strong turn of foot, Let’sfacethemusic should prove too good late.

Selections:

  • Mystic Reign silks5

Race 2: Group 3 Ottawa Stakes (1000m)

Elsa Of Arandelle caught the eye when hitting the line strongly on debut at Moonee Valley and shapes as a key contender in the 2025 Ottawa Stakes. The two-year-old filly gave her rivals too big of a start in a small field, but once she hit top gear, the Frosted filly was low-flying inside the final 200m when beaten 2.3 lengths. The Flemington straight should suit her perfectly, and with a similar finish, Elsa Of Arendelle will take a power of beating.

  • Elsa Of Arendelle silks5

  • Gin Spirit silks1

Race 3: Vale Michael Moroney (1100m)

Wolfy has not placed in his last three runs, but the Nick Ryan-trained gelding looks to have found the right race to add a fifth career win to his name. There looks to be plenty of speed engaged in this 1100m event, which should set it up for a horse like Wolfy who is more prominent over 1200m and 1400m. Mark Zahra will have him towards the rear of the field, and if they overdo it out in front, Wolfy has a turn of foot that not many of his rivals will be able to match.

Selections:

  • Wolfy silks10

    WOLFY

  • Don't Hope Do silks12

  • Mytemptation silks13

Race 4: Group 3 Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap (1400m)

Despite being off the racing scene since March 2024, the first-up record that Ayrton brings to the Shaftesbury Avenue Handicap is hard to ignore. Having won five of seven first-up runs, the son of Iffraaj clearly fires with freshness in his legs. He will need to overcome Is It Me, who is in red-hot form, but with a couple of trials under his belt leading into this, Ayrton only needs the right run in transit to be featuring in the finish.

Selections:

  • Ayrton silks1

Race 5: Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m)

Vinrock could not have done much more when winning stylishly on debut at Pakenham on February 20, leading throughout over 1200m and finishing with plenty left in reserve. The son of I Am Invincible will be suited stepping up to the 1400m for the first time, and with Mark Zahra sticking on as an added bonus, Vinrock looks like the one they have to run down in the 2025 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes.

Race 6: Australian Cup Prelude (2000m)

Duke De Sessa was super when returning from a spell to win the Group 3 JRA Plate (1600m) at Caulfield last month. The 2024 Caulfield Cup winner will step up to the 2000m on Saturday, and despite being a maiden at the trip through nine attempts, the son of Lope De Vega is clearly the class horse in this field. He draws perfectly in barrier one under Harry Coffey, and as he showed when sprinting sharply with 60kg on his back first-up, the 59.5kg should be no issue as Duke De Sessa continues on his winning ways.

Selections:

  • Duke De Sessa silks1

Race 7: Group 1 All-Star Mile (1600m)

A small but talented field of seven will duke it out for the $2.5 million on offer in the 2025 All-Star Mile. Mr Brightside is looking to create further history by becoming the first horse to win multiple editions of the race, but the new weight-for-age guns in Another Wil and Tom Kitten are out to spoil the party. Who will reign supreme?

Race 8: Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1600m)

There are no prizes for tipping a $1.80 favourite, but this field simply will not get close to Treasurethe Moment. A similar field could not bring her undone over 1400m on return at Caulfield on February 22, and considering she will only get better as she steps out in trip, it is hard to see the VRC Oaks winner getting beat. Damian Lane will have Treasurethe Moment settled outside the lead throughout, and barring any unforeseen circumstances, she should be far too good in the 2025 Kewney Stakes.

Race 9: Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m)

Maharba hardly fired a shot first-up in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield, but as he returns to Flemington in the 2025 Newmarket Handicap, he represents excellent value with horse racing betting sites. The four-year-old gelding boasts two wins and a minor placing through three runs at the track, and with three wins and five minor placings from nine starts over 1200m, he clearly looks the wrong price at $19.

Selections:

  • Maharba silks2

Race 10: Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m)

Alma Rise simply did not handle the Soft track at Caulfield before heading to the paddock, but she looks a great value play on the firmer ground at Flemington. The four-year-old mare was one of the better winners during the Melbourne Cup Carnival last year in BM80 company, and considering a few of her rivals have reached their potential, the untapped ability of Alma Rise stands out in a field like this. The Almanzor mare is a push-button runner, and despite 1600m potentially being a bit short for her, the Flemington straight and a genuine tempo will aid her chances in the 2025 Matron Stakes.

Selections:

  • Alma Rise silks11
