A rare Friday afternoon meeting is scheduled for Flemington, and HorseBetting’s Victorian tipping expert presents his best bets and quaddie numbers along with odds from Australia’s top online bookmakers. The track is rated a Good 4, while the rail is out 12m for the entire circuit. The first of seven races – all of which will take place down the Flemington straight – is set to kick off at 3pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Flemington – Hills
Our best bet of the day comes up in the third leg of the quaddie as the Will Clarken-trained Hills returns from a seven-month spell. The now five-year-old mare out of Not A Single Doubt showed promising signs last campaign in Adelaide having not missed the top three in three runs, which included a dominant win over 1000m. Hills is a winner of two races from five runs when first-up, which includes a narrow third-place finish at Murray Bridge last campaign. This will be her first look at Flemington since 2019, but considering the improvement she showed last campaign, she should handle the occasion with aplomb. Look for Will Gordon to have Hills settled just off the speed, and when asked for an effort, the bay mare should prove too hard to hold out. We are more than happy to take the $3.30 on offer with Sportsbet.
Next Best at Flemington – Smokin’ Holly
In the opening race of the day, we will be hoping the Dale Short-trained Smokin’ Holly can bring up a deserved maiden win following consecutive runner-up efforts to begin this campaign. The three-year-old Exosphere filly was last seen finishing three-quarters of a length off No Baby No at Yarra Valley on December 28, and that form looks good enough for a maiden like this. The addition of Brett Prebble is a massive bonus, especially for a horse who prefers to be up on speed. With a similar run to her previous two this time in, Smokin’ Holly should get us off to a winning start on Friday.
Best Value at Flemington – El Santo
In the second leg of the quaddie, the Brent Stanley-trained El Salto will be out to break a string of runner-up performances with a win over 1100m. The four-year-old bay gelding out of Written Tycoon finished under a half-length off Titans at Moonee Valley on December 17 and looks perfectly placed to break through for another win. He was held up from the 400m-200m at The Valley and then was blocked again for a run until the final 50m; once he saw clear air, however, he jumped out of the ground to go down narrowly. With even luck at Flemington on Friday, El Santo’s turn of foot should be good enough to take out a race like this.
