Racing returns to headquarters this weekend at Flemington, where we are expecting extremely hot conditions with the mercury tipped to reach 38 degrees in Melbourne, forcing Racing Victoria to bring the meeting forward two hours and kick off Standish Raceday at 10:30am AEDT.
A massive nine-race card is scheduled, with the highlight event being the Listed Standish Handicap down the famous Flemington straight. The track is currently rated a Good 4, but with the expected hot weather, don’t be surprised if we start somewhere between a Good 4 and a Soft 5, to make sure the track doesn’t get too firm throughout the day. The rail will be out in the +8m position for the entire circuit, which could play favourable to leaders in the circle races.
Standish Handicap Top Tip: Halvorsen
The feature event at Flemington on Saturday will be the Listed $250,000 Standish Handicap over 1200m, where the market is wide-open at $5 plus for the whole field. We will be siding with the 2020 and 2022 winner of this race, Halvorsen, as he looks to record his third win in the race. Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock have set this seven-year-old gelding for the Standish Handicap, and he will hit it third up after running in the Listed Century Handicap and Listed Christmas Stakes at his first two starts this preparation. His last run in the Christmas Stakes at Sandown can be put down to the fact that he doesn’t show up when he goes to Sandown with his record sitting at two starts for a third place throughout his career. Now that this son of Magnus returns to the Flemington straight, a course that he loves, he will be a much different racehorse. From barrier 11 Blake Shinn will drop to the rear of the field and if the leaders set a solid tempo, this guy will be flying home late.

Best Bet at Flemington: Dunkel
After online bookmakers opened at $3 plus on Wednesday afternoon, many punters stepped in and loaded up on Dunkel in the second race of the day. This three-year-old gelding has been impressive at all three of his careers starts to date, recording two wins and a second, with some people suggesting he should be undefeated. Patrick Payne looks to have a very talented galloper on his hands, with a wicked turn of foot, and he has already shown that he can carry weight over the staying distances. On Saturday, this son of Dundeel will have to carry 61kg for the first time, but considering the field he meets is rather weak, he should have little to no problems carrying the weight and recording another win.

Next Best at Flemington: British Columbia
The last race of the day will see two four-year-old geldings battle it out at the top of the market, with the Peter Moody-trained Victory Bay and Grahame Begg-trained British Columbia sitting alone at the top of the market at $3.10 and $3.50, respectively. We will be siding with the latter of the two – British Columbia – who is coming off a close second over 1300m at Sandown on Boxing Day in a Benchmark 70 Handicap. The main reason we are siding with the Begg-trained runner is that he has drawn much more favourable in barrier three and he will hold a prominent position or even lead in this field. This son of Vancouver will be second-up on Saturday and he has only been second-up once before in his career, where he won at Sandown over 1400m back in March of 2022. If Jordan Childs can lead or sit behind the leaders and start to lift the tempo as the field rounds the final bend, he should give this guy every chance to return to the winners circle.

Best Value at Flemington: Delta Tango
The third race of the day will see a full field of 16 runners battle it out over 2000m and we think that there is value to be found with Delta Tango at $10 with online betting sites. This five-year-old mare has been in great form this campaign, finishing in the placings at five her last six starts, including a very good second behind Chandon Burj at Sandown over 1800m on Boxing Day. From barrier one on Saturday, Jarrod Fry will take the reins and should get all the favours just in behind the speed upon settling. In the final 600m, Fry will need to get this girl off the fence and gain a little bit of luck to find clean air to allow her to let down with a strong finishing burst.
