Those that attended The Great Chase at Sandown in 2019 would recall a ‘footy finals’ theme. 120 participants turned out in their footy colours to cheer home the greyhounds on the track, but – unlike the AFL finals – this day was all about the dogs.
Celeste, from the Wallara (Close Avenue) team, was excited for the chance to attend the Great Chase again.
“It’s always a great day out, a fantastic atmosphere and the dogs… the clients love the dogs. They get treated like kings and queens and feel so comfortable in the welcoming atmosphere provided by GRV.”
Every year Victoria’s greyhound tracks host a Great Chase community day for groups that care for the intellectually and physically disabled. The groups are randomly partnered with greyhounds competing on the day, with the better performed dogs amassing prize money for the organisations.
Blairlogie finished top of the ladder in 2019, collecting a first prize of $600. Tracey and Jackson from the group said it all.
“Woohoo! Excited! We will put the money back into more social outings for the guys and making sure we have more fun.”
Blairlogie was certainly blessed with some form knowledge, Tracey admitted.
“I used to box and catch the dogs. My dad used to be a greyhound trainer,” she said.
The Great Chase is Victorian greyhound racing’s number one community event, distributing almost $650,000 to the disability sector since 2003.
