Zac Lloyd and Team Hawkes have combined with Electric Girl to take out the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes at Rosehill, running over the top of last year’s winner Expat in the final 100m.
With Expat setting up a very hot tempo, Lloyd settled Electric Girl in the box seat, albeit two to three lengths off the leader, which gave the daughter of Declaration Of War every chance to get off the fence and with 300m to go and go after the runaway leader.
Electric Girl jumped as a third-favourite at $7.50 with online bookmakers, with the race favourite, Mariamia, finishing fourth as she started to drop out of the race with 200m to go.
After winning the Millie Fox first-up, Electric Girl could be in for a very good autumn carnival, with the likes of the Doncaster Mile and Queen Of The Turf Stakes two possible targets.
2023 Millie Fox Stakes Replay – Electric Girl
After somewhat of a dry spell for the Hawkes team this win by Electric Girl could see the tide start to turn for one of the premier horse training teams in Australia.
Wayne Hawkes spoke post-race about the win in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes.
“She only arrived up here early this week and one thing about this mare, she just loves hard ground, the harder the better,” Hawkes said.
“She is as honest as the day is long and she just finds.
“The thing I love about her is she finds and she finds hard.
“I’ve got to give Zac (Lloyd) credit, the last thing I said to him was count to ten before you really go out and just be patient.
“She has always had that bit of unluckiness about her being on rain-affected ground and the harder for her the better.”
Zac Lloyd brought up a double on Silver Slipper Stakes Day with the win on Electric Girl and he spoke post-race about the win.
“Geez I was lucky, once the draw came out I was very confident,” Lloyd said.
“Once I saw the favourite (Mariamia) get across quite cheaply I thought he might be hard to beat, but my mare dug in deep and she’s a quality mare.
“When I straightened, I just had to go through my gears slowly and steadily and try not rush her through it.
“She felt like she was going to give me a lot, I just had to help her through that tough 400m to 300m mark, but she really extended nicely to the line.”
Electric Girl is now $26 with online betting sites in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes futures market.
