The Echuca Cup is the feature event on Sunday afternoon as racing heads to Echuca Racecourse, and with a bit of luck, HorseBetting’s Victorian form expert can find a couple of winners for the day. The track is in perfect order for racing, rated a Good 4 with the rail in the true position for the club’s marquee day. The first of eight races gets underway at 12:50pm AEDT.
Echuca Cup Top Tip – Not To Be Mist
The feature event of the day is the $100,000 Echuca Cup over 1400m, and we have opted to side with the Nick Ryan-trained Not To Be Mist. Despite the likes of Crosshaven and Cherry Tortoni being in the acceptances, those Group-quality runners are expected to go around at Flemington on Super Saturday the day prior. However, Not To Be Mist comes to the Cup following a decent showing behind Rose Quartz at Flemington on February 19 and looks primed to step back up to 1400m. Three starts back he was 1.5 lengths off Lighthouse in the Chester Manifold Stakes, and that form stacks up nicely in this, with Lighthouse coming out and placing in the C.F. Orr Stakes and Canterbury Stakes. With a genuine tempo expected over the seven furlongs, look for Not To Be Mist to get back upon settling and then finish over the top of his rivals.
Echuca Best Bet – Forever Free
Our best bet of the day comes from the Mathew Ellerton yard as his four-year-old mare Forever Free returns from an eight-month spell. The Exceed And Excel mare was chasing home the likes of Express Pass, Malkovich and Esta La Rocca during her winter campaign, and that form looks more than good enough for this BM78 affair. She flies when fresh, having claimed two wins and a minor placing from three starts when resuming, and she should be building on that record this Sunday. From barrier one, she draws to gain a suck run in transit under Damian Lane, and with speed drawn to her direct outside in Lunar Hero, she will be able to track the speed throughout and then put them away with a nice turn of foot. The $2.30 on offer from Ladbrokes looks a perfect price.
Echuca Value Bet – Numpty
In the opening leg of the quaddie, we will be hoping the Archie Alexander-trained Numpty can break through for a well-deserved win having finished second in three of her last four starts. The four-year-old Free Eagle mare was beaten by the barest of margins at Swan Hill on February 15 when making up stacks of ground in the home straight from the rear of the field to just miss out on the win. She steps out to the 1400m for just the second time in her career but looks more than capable of taking out a race like this. With rivals Thunder Park and Bon Shadow set to make this a genuinely run affair, the race should be set up for Numpty to finish over the top and bring up a second career win.
