‘Stradbroke Season’ is officially underway in Queensland this Saturday with the running of three black-type races on an exciting nine-race program at Eagle Farm. The Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) and Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) headline a terrific day of racing that kicks off at 11:28am AEST, while the Listed Dalrello Stakes (1000m) gives punters the first look at the good two-year-olds ahead of the Brisbane Winter Carnival. The track at Eagle Farm is currently rated a Good 4 and the rail is out 5m for the entire course, which should give every horse their chance. HorseBetting’s Queensland racing expert presents his best bets in all three feature races, as well as his top picks for the remainder of the program and his suggested quaddie numbers.
Dalrello Stakes Best Bet – Brereton
Tough race! A capacity field of 12 two-year-olds will do battle in the first black-type race of the afternoon, and one horse who jumps off the page for us is the Victorian visitor Brereton. The Peter Moody-trained colt was a beaten favourite on debut at Caulfield, before coming out and winning the Group 3 Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day. The son of Zoustar looked to have had enough in his next start in late November, running fourth in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes (1000m) behind Ebhaar. He has been in Queensland for a couple of weeks now, trialling at Deagon on April 19 in nice style. From barrier three, Brereton is going to get the perfect trail behind the speed, and in-form hoop James Orman hops in the saddle. He can win at a nice price.

Queensland Guineas Best Bet – Green Belt
Green Belt tasted his first defeat in the Daybreak Lover a fortnight ago at this track over 1400m, but there was plenty of merit in his runner-up performance. The Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr-trained three-year-old only arrived in Brisbane on the Thursday, and we have seen in the past some horses not handle their first look at Eagle Farm before bouncing back and winning well at their next start on the track (think Ayrton this time last year). If that is the case, this son of Declaration Of War could blow this field away. Jim Byrne is riding well of late, so we trust that he will find a nice spot from barrier 13 – he could possibly even lead – while the horse should take plenty of benefit from his last-start performance. We did really liked the runs of Cape Breton and Ashgrove in the Daybreak Lover, so we have respect for that pair, but we want to stick with Green Belt in this race.

Victory Stakes Best Bet – Count De Rupee
What a race this will be! While we do concede Rothfire could just blow this field away, we just want to see him go around first-up off an injury-enforced break before we go diving into the rather short odds. One horse who can beat the Queenslander is the Robert & Luke Price-trained Count De Rupee, who comes off a slashing run in the Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) at Randwick a fortnight ago when second to Kementari. The four-year-old son of Real Impact is going to love the big straight at Eagle Farm and, more importantly, the dry surface. From the inside alley, regular rider Brock Ryan will get the gun run behind the hot tempo and bring his star sprinter into clear air in the straight, where he will be humming home. Don’t screw your ticket up until the race is over, because this galloper will be flying late.

Best Bet at Eagle Farm – Three Wise Men
A fortnight ago, the southern raiders dominated the Eagle Farm meeting, and they look well placed to do so again this weekend. We are going out on a bit of a limb with our best bet on Saturday and tipping the Ed Cummings-trained Three Wise Men. This three-year-old son of Divine Prophet has not made an impression this campaign, but all three runs have been on bottomless tracks in Sydney where he has carried some big weights. We noticed Cummings scratch this horse a few times from Group races during the Sydney Autumn Carnival due to the tracks being too wet, so we are taking note. Now at Eagle Farm on a dry, firm surface and in with just 54kg on his back, he can be very competitive. Ben Thompson will do the riding from barrier four – which is certainly suitable, as this horse does like to get back in his races. Last time out, Three Wise Men was one of only a few horses all day at Randwick to make ground, so if he brings that run to a dry Eagle Farm, watch out!

Next Best at Eagle Farm – Go Wandji
We will see a pretty handy galloper step out in the last race of the afternoon in the form of the Tom Dougall-trained Go Wandji. The four-year-old son of Wandjina is yet to miss a place in nine starts, winning six of those and being luckless in the others. Larry Cassidy has built a very good affiliation with the horse of late, winning three of his past four starts on the galloper and going down narrowly last time out. Back in November, the promising horse was a strong winner at this track and distance in Class 3 company, and he now faces Class 6 horses. This horse continues to improve with each run and he strikes a winnable race, so he should win this.

Best Value at Eagle Farm – Seduction Queen
We have always had a bit of an opinion of Seduction Queen, and she lines up in a winnable Class 3 Plate on Saturday for new trainers Steve O’Dea & Matt Hoysted. The daughter of Kermadec has won three of 17 and been in the minor money on seven occasions, and she looks to have come back in good order based off what we have seen in two trials at the Sunshine Coast and Deagon. From barrier eight, Queensland’s leading apprentice, Jaden Lloyd, will take the four-year-old mare forward and look for a prominent spot in running, which should see her tough to run down. Don’t be surprised to see her win this race in a real dogfight.
