If this Doomben meeting goes ahead on Saturday, we will be shocked. The track has received nearly 800m of rain in the past seven days and even more is forecast, so the odds of us racing there are drifting by the minute. If it does go ahead, there will be a 10-race meeting headlined by the Listed Tattersall’s Members’ Cup, which was meant to be run last Saturday before the meeting was abandoned. The track is rated a Heavy 10, while the rail is out 1m for the entire circuit. HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the day, along with odds from Australia’s top bookmakers.
Listed Tattersall’s Members’ Cup – Sea Raider
We never thought we’d say it, but Sea Raider form might just be the best in Queensland at the minute. The five-year-old gelding has won two of his past three, with the only miss coming when narrowly beaten by Profit at this track and distance on February 12. The margin was only 0.75 lengths on that occasion, but he now gets onto a heavy track and meets Profit 3.5kg better, so we think he should be able to turn the tables in this. He loves heavy going, winning three from three on bog tracks, while the 1600m is his go.
Best Bet at Doomben – She’sgottheboom
Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted saddle up impressive debut winner She’sgottheboom in Saturday’s QTIS 2YO Jewel Prelude for fillies. The daughter of Spirit Of Boom bolted in at this track and trip on debut on February 16, defeating Even Now by three lengths. Even Now came out and won her next start by over nine lengths at Toowoomba on Wednesday, franking that form. Having drawn barrier one on Saturday, Boris Thornton should be able to control things from in front on She’sgottheboom as she races away with the prize once again. Her maiden win came on a Soft 6, so that experience will be of big benefit. We can’t see much in this race capable of beating her at level weights.
Next Best at Doomben – Gogol
Les Kelly and Boris Thornton combine in the penultimate race with a deadset winning machine in Gogol. The five-year-old son of I Am Invincible has won eight of his 20 career starts and is now shooting for three straight wins, after beating Osamu at this track on February 5 and then winning comfortably at the Gold Coast seven days later over 1200m. Gogol is yet to win in three starts over this distance, but the heavy track will bring him right into this race, having won two from four on bottomless decks. A win here would mean he has won seven of his past 10 starts, and gee, he looks well placed to do so.
Best Value at Doomben – Prince Of Boom
This is a hot race – there is no denying that – but Prince Of Boom has panels on these horses. The Rob Heathcote-trained three-year-old won with a leg in the air on debut at the Sunshine Coast on a Heavy 8 track, then backed up six days later to bolt in in the Group 2 Champagne Classic over 1200m at Doomben on a Soft 7. It was all a bit much for him in his next start in the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes, where he started favourite against Tiger Of Malay and Converge. In his two runs last preparation, he started favourite against Startantes both times, and that filly is now a two-time Group 1 placegetter, so being beaten roughly four lengths by her is certainly nothing to laugh at. The son of Spirit Of Boom now gets back onto a rain-affected surface for the first time since winning a Group 2, which could be the key to his success. The gelding trialled brilliantly at Deagon on February 22 over 1050m, so we expect him to be ready to go fresh. James Orman will make his way across the field to be handy in the run from barrier 12, and we expect Prince Of Boom to be far too good for this lot. Some betting sites are paying up to $6 for the win, and that looks an absolute steal.
