As the curtain closes on another massive Queensland Summer Carnival, racing returns to Doomben on Saturday afternoon. HorseBetting’s Brisbane racing expert brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the nine-race card, where he expects an impressive debut winner to be hard to beat once again. The track is rated a Soft 5, the rail is in the true position for the entire course, and the first race will jump at 12:08pm AEST.
Best Bet at Doomben – Amity Gal
David Vandyke and Ryan Maloney combine in the first leg of the quaddie with Amity Gal, who was a dominant winner on debut. The three-year-old is a half-sister to Baccarat Baby and Amiche, while she is a full-sister to last year’s Queensland Oaks winner, Duais. The filly by Shamus Award led all of the way in her first race start on January 2 at the Sunshine Coast, justifying her $1.20 quote to win by 1.3 lengths under very light riding on a Heavy 8 track. She rises from 1000m to 1200m, which looks as though it will suit, while the wide barrier (9) may allow Maloney to look for cover in the first half of the field and leave some gas in the tank for the concluding stages of the race. This is much tougher than what Amity Gal was up against on debut, but she has plenty of ability and can easily go on with the job in her first metropolitan run.
Next Best at Doomben – Cloak
David Vandyke has a 20% winning strike rate at Doomben, so we are hoping he can continue to grow that impressive record on Saturday when he takes a few runners south from the Sunshine Coast. Early on in the day, Vandyke and Leah Kilner combine with Cloak, a $7 chance with online bookmakers. The six-year-old was assigned the top weight of 59kg, but Kilner’s 2kg claim means he will be in with just 57kg, which sees him very well placed. The son of Medaglia d’Oro was a winner at this track and distance on May 22, where he defeated Goldifox and Milk Man in a good, front-running ride by Kate Cowan. In three runs this campaign, the gelding has been well beaten in Open and Listed races, behind the likes of Wapiti, Charmmebaby and Niccanova, so he should find this Benchmark 90 much easier. From barrier seven, we expect to see Kilner send this Doomben specialist to the front and take a sit behind Jacksprat, which will give the duo every chance to take over the running in the straight and get back into the winner’s stall.
Best Value at Doomben – Sciconic
Brian Smith and Larry Cassidy will team up in the fourth race of the day on the consistent Sciconic. The son of Redoute’s Choice has not won since April 2020, but he did have 14 months off the scene after that win and has only raced nine times since, placing second on three occasions. One of those runner-up performances was four starts back at the Gold Coast where he was just one length of Navy Cross, the winner of last Saturday’s $1 million Magic Millions Subzero (2400m), while he beat home Grafton Cup winner Purrfect Deal. Since then, Sciconic has finishing fourth twice and second the once in races where he has been getting out further in distance each time. Now fourth-up and at 2000m again, this five-year-old gelding should be peaking on a fitness base, while a decent tempo will allow him to finish strongly from the back half of the field. He is going well enough to win this race.
