This Saturday, the Brisbane Racing Club will host a highly competitive nine-race program at Doomben Racecourse. After a deluge of rain in the Brisbane area over the last few days, the track is currently rated a Heavy 9; however, with no rain forecast for Friday and Saturday, we should see the track dry out and hopefully begin racing on a Soft 6 or 7. The rail will be pushed out to the +3.5m position for the entire circuit, which is 2m more than when we raced at Doomben last time, making the track more favourable to leaders and on-speed runners. The first race will jump at 11:53am AEST.
Best Bet at Doomben: Manhood
Manhood, trained by Annabel Neasham, is coming off a very nice first-up win this preparation. This son of Headwater returned to the racetrack as a gelding after receiving the ‘ultimate gear change’ in the paddock, and he proved too good for the Class 6 field over 1200m at Eagle Farm on March 11, defeating Enterprise Pomme by half a length on the line. That win kept this four-year-old gelding’s unblemished first-up record intact, and now that he comes to Doomben second-up, he looks awfully hard to beat in a weaker Benchmark 85 Handicap over 1200m. Jag Guthmann-Chester has a perfect 3-0 record on this guy and will keep the ride this Saturday. We should Manhood settle outside the leader and kick clear in the final 200m to make it back-to-back wins to start the campaign.

Next Best at Doomben: Da Party Gal
We were with the Tony Gollan-trained Da Party Gal when she finished second behind Dune Forty Five, going down by two lengths on the line and easily beating the rest of the field. This daughter of Scissor Kick enjoys racing at Doomben, where she has two wins and two placings from six attempts, and she looks very well placed now that she is third-up for this race. This four-year-old mare will remain in the Benchmark 78 Handicap grade, and with a lot of speed influences, the race should set up nicely for her to settle out the back and let it unfold in front of her. James Orman will be legged aboard for his first ride on the mare, with Angela Jones already booked on the other Gollan runner, Argyle Pink. If Orman can give her a nice quiet ride and get her moving into clear air at the 600m mark, she will have every chance to break through for a well-deserved win.

Best Value at Doomben: Mouette
The fourth race of the day will be a Class 3 Handicap 1050m sprint in which the Danny Bougoure-trained Mouette looks well placed to win for the fourth time at start number 10, after finishing second by the narrowest of margins at the Sunshine Coast last time out. At her most recent start, this three-year-old filly led for 995m of the 1000m before Ruby Chicks levelled up and got her head down on the line to win by a nose. This daughter of Better Than Ready knows only one way to race – jump to the front and lead at all costs – with three wins and three placings coming from races in which she led. Malea Castle will take the reins for her first ride on this girl on Saturday, and with the aid of her 3kg claim, she should be able to find the lead and run the race to suit, knowing she has a strong and fit filly underneath her.
