What Donald Races
Where Donald Racecourse – 990 Jeffcott Rd, Donald VIC 3480
When Friday, July 21, 2023
First Race 1pm AEST

Donald will play host to a very competitive eight-race card this Friday afternoon. The track is currently rated a Soft 6 and is not expected to improve, as there is more rain on the forecast for Thursday. The rail will be in the +2m position for the entire circuit, with racing set to kick off at 1pm AEST.

Best Bet at Donald: All About Eve

All About Eve gave her rivals too much of a start first-up at Caulfield in a Fillies & Mares Benchmark 84 Handicap on June 24, where she flew home from the back of the field to finish second – just over a length behind Viviane. With this four-year-old mare dropping back from city to country grade second-up over 1000m, expect her to perform much better. There appears to be a good amount of speed on paper, which should allow this daughter of Star Turn to settle just worse than midfield and round them up in the home straight to record her fourth career win.

Next Best at Donald: Whiskey Hangover

The Ben & JD Hayes-trained Whiskey Hangover will be seeking to go one better than his last two starts, finishing runner-up on both occasions at Sale over 1213m and 1400m in Benchmark 64 grade. This three-year-old gelding appeared to have the race within his keeping at his last start with 300m to go; however, he started to run out of steam with 100m left and ended getting run over by the winner, Regal Azmon. With this son of All Too Hard dropping back in distance to 1354m, expect him to get the job done and return to the winner’s circle.

Race 8 – Silk #9 Whiskey Hangover (3)

Best Value at Donald: Bors

Bors clearly didn’t handle the step up in grade from Benchmark 64 to Benchmark 70 in town at Sandown last start, as he finished 10th of 16 and was beaten by over seven lengths. The Gavin Bedggood-trained gelding will appreciate the drop from metropolitan to country grade on Friday, and with another wet track expected, this son of Fastnet Rock should produce something like his best effort. Beau Mertens will ride this gelding for the sixth-straight time, seeking his third win. If Mertens can find a good spot behind the leaders from barrier two, Bors will play a prominent role in the finish.

Best Value

Race 5 – Silk #2 Bors (2)

4yo Gelding | T: Gavin Bedggood | J: Beau Mertens (59.5kg)
