HorseBetting’s Victorian form analyst presents his best bets, quaddie numbers and odds comparison for the eight-race card at Donald on Sunday afternoon for Donald Cup Day. The track is rated a Soft 5, with the rail in the true position the entire circuit for the meeting getting underway at 1:15pm AEDT.
Donald Cup Best Bet – Petruchio
Archie Alexander and Will Price are set to combine in Sunday’s Donald Cup with Petruchio who is coming off an unlucky run at Geelong on October 20. Having been held for a run at a crucial point, he simply had too much to do when finding clear air and could do no better than a two-length defeat. He has a close up defeat to Floating Artist this campaign, who has subsequently gone on to run fourth in a Melbourne Cup. Three of his four career wins have come at the 1600m and with just 54kg on his back in Sunday’s feature, we expect to see Price have him moving from the rear of the field approaching the home turn, where he should ultimately prove too hard to hold out late.
Donald Best Bet – Kwoi Hoi
The Cliff Brown-trained Kwo Hoi was scratched from The Valley on Friday night to be saved for this on Sunday and looks a clear best bet on Donald Cup Day. Having won her maiden at Kyneton by four lengths two starts back on October 12, the four-year-old Danerich gelding chased home the city class runner in Holster on Kyneton Cup Day when finishing second on a detreating track. From barrier three, we expect Patrick Moloney to have him settled outside the leader throughout and with race fitness on his side, the 2000m on rain affected ground should be no issue and we expect Kwoi Hoi to make it two wins from his past three starts in a strong staying affair.
Next Best at Donald – Magic City
We were with the Henry Dwyer-trained Magic City at Kyneton on November 3 but was defeated by the barest of margins having been left flat footed at a crucial point. Michael Poy will stick with him on Sunday and from barrier six, we expect to see Poy have the four-year-old son of Magic Albert settled in the first four where he can ask for an effort at an appropriate time. He clearly has the strongest form line in the maiden having chased home the smart duo of Mornington Glory and Oriental Legend this campaign. If he can avoid that flat spot and let down as he did at Kyneton, he should be breaking his maiden at start five.
