Dominant Inglis Sires’ Winner Anamoe Now Eyes Champagne Stakes

The money proved dead right at Royal Randwick on Saturday as impressive Godolphin two-year-old Anamoe put paid to his rivals in the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ Produce.

The colt by Street Boss firmed into as short as $1.90 with Ladbrokes coming off a last-start second to Stay Inside in the Golden Slipper – a performance punters were happy to back him on with James McDonald in the saddle for the first time.

With Tiger Malay and Lightsaber both pushing forward, the pair chose to settle midfield before quickly shifting into top gear at the 300m mark to race clear and win by three lengths.

Despite being up since February, winning trainer James Cummings said after the race that there is a good chance the team could push on towards further Group 1 glory in the Champagne Stakes (1600m) back at Randwick in three week’s time.

“You’d just have to ask yourself, what’s going to be in the Champagne to threaten this horse? But of course, it goes without saying, we’ll just make sure that he’s 100 percent, but it’d certainly be an attractive thing to go on and claim it,” Cummings told Channel 7.

Anamoe hasn’t put a foot wrong since he debuted at Caulfield in the Listed Debutant Stakes last October – the only time he hasn’t finished in the money.

The two-year-old went on to show further promise in the top class to finish only 2.5L third in the Blue Diamond in February before claiming his first win at Group level last month in the Todman.

As for Saturday’s win, Cummings thinks his colt could give Stay Inside a run for his money as the best two-year-old in the country.

“You just cannot win a Group 1 anymore effortlessly than that. Doesn’t that just stamp him as one of the best two-year-olds in the country? If you missed his run in the Slipper, then his win today does nothing but stamp authority all over the class,” Cummings went on to say.

After winning by three lengths, the mile looks a lovely option for him now in the Champagne Stakes, and not surprisingly, Anamoe has firmed into as short as $1.50 with Ladbrokes bookmakers.
