Racing continues at Fannie Bay on Saturday with the Darwin Turf Club hosting a competitive meeting with the 2023 Cup Carnival just a month away. A total of 46 horses have accepted for the six-race card with last year’s Palmerston Sprint winner, Syncline – the Top End’s Horse of the Year for 2022 – making his long-awaited return in the feature race – a Benchmark 76 Handicap over 1100m with a 63.5kg burden.
Still no rain in Darwin since April 27, with sunny conditions and light winds the order of the day on Saturday with a top temperature of 33C. The rail will be in the true position and the track will be a good dirt surface.
BEST BET: DOC O’CONNOR
Doc O’Connor is carrying a big weight once again, but the former Victorian gelding hasn’t put a foot wrong since arriving from the stable of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace in Ballarat. A first-up win over 1100m (Class 2) at Fannie Bay on March 4 was followed by a narrow second to Soul Spirit, who is above average, over 1000m (Class 2) as a $1.85 favourite lumping 61kg on March 31. The son of Lonhro returned to overcome fellow three-year-olds over 1100m (BM57) on May 27 with 62kg on his back. Daniher and Perisseuo won’t be easy on Saturday, but Doc O’Connor is racing well. In six starts before heading to the NT, he won a 1000m maiden on the Ballarat synthetic surface in August and finished second over 1000m (BM62) against the three-year-olds at Morphettville Parks in October.

NEXT BEST: BRIMARVI ROOBOY
Brimarvi Rooboy has always been a solid performer in the Top End after positing three wins from 18 starts in SA. The son of Host managed four wins and six minor placings from 24 starts since debuting at Fannie Bay in June 2021, but during the month of May he could not have been more impressive after overwhelming the opposition. Returning from a five month break, the six-year-old gelding finished fourth behind Zip Lane over 1100m (0-58) on Anzac Day before smashing his rivals by 7.3 lengths over 1300m (0-58) on May 6 as a $2.20 favourite carrying 56kg and proving just as convincing after getting home by four lengths over 1300m (0-64) two weeks ago as a $1.65 favourite with a 56kg impost. The in-form Lines once again claims 3kg and with a decent gate Brimarvi Rooboy should prove competitive once again.

BEST VALUE: SUPER FAMOUS
Super Famous appears to be getting closer to a win after two starts in Darwin after a third behind Pop Magic over 1100m (BM54) on May 20 and a second behind Captain George over 1200m (BM54) last Saturday. It might well be a quick back up for the four-year-old gelding, but he was quoted as a $5 hope during the week and that was certainly hard to ignore. The son of Super One, who did most of his racing in Queensland before joining the stable of Murray Bridge-based trainer Peacock, debuted in the NT last year as a three-year-old and proved competitive during the Alice Springs Cup Carnival before matching it against some very good sprinters during the Darwin Cup Carnival where he managed two wins and three minor placing from five starts. It’s hard not to see him make an impact on Saturday.
