It might well be the off-season in the Top End, but a highly competitive five-race meeting awaits where finding winners will prove a difficult task for punters. Only 2.8mm of rain has fallen in Darwin since April 5, with sunny conditions and a top temperature of 36C the forecast for Saturday. The rail will once again be in the true position, and as usual at Fannie Bay, it will be a good dirt surface.
BEST BET: Fierce Legend
Fierce Legend finally posted that first NT win when he jumped from the inside gate and led from start to finish over 1700m (0-64) at Katherine on August 17. He finished second in the same race in 2023, but in 10 starts in Darwin, the son of Deep Field has only managed to finish third on three occasions. The former NSW galloper finished third in the NT Derby (2050m) last year. Fierce Legend was impressive in Katherine and can go on with the job on Saturday.

NEXT BEST: Canton Kid
Canton Kid boasts six wins and eight minor placings from 27 Top End starts from 1000-1200m. After saluting over 1000m (0-76) on June 29, the seven-year-old gelding was third over 1100m (BM76) on July 17 before finishing sixth in the Simone Montgomerie Lightning (1000m) on August 5 when Rising Sphere broke the track record (55.96). The son of Written Tycoon was off the pace before finishing strongly to grab third place behind Rising Sphere over 1000m (BM76) two weeks ago.

BEST VALUE: Egyptian Tycoon
Arriving from Phillip Stokes’ Morphettville stable, Egyptian Tycoon was far from disgraced when fourth on his NT debut over 1000m (0-58) on July 13. The son of Written Tycoon then featured on Darwin Cup Day when third over 1200m (0-58), but nothing went right for the six-year-old gelding when he finished last in eighth place over 1100m (0-58) at Katherine on August 17. Rearing at the start, he failed to settle before fading in his quest to make up ground. At $17 with horse racing bookmakers, he deserves to be considered.
