After an outstanding 10-race program last Saturday to launch the 2023 Darwin Cup Carnival, we have seven races this weekend and a potential Darwin Cup winner might be on deck as Write Your Name steps out in the $60,000 Chief Minister’s Cup (1600m) at weight-for-age. It will once again be sunny on Saturday – only 0.8mm of rain has fallen in Darwin since April 27 – with a light easterly wind and a top temperature of 32C. The rail will be in the true position and the track will be a good dirt surface.

Although stepping up in grade, Throw At Da Stumps has runs on the board after producing two slashing efforts since arriving in the Top End. Before heading north from Victoria, the four-year-old gelding had three starts for Cranbourne trainers Ken and Kasey Keys at Kyneton in March and April for two seconds over 1100m (BM58) and 1479m (BM58). The son of Rich Enuff made a huge impression first up at Fannie Bay when he overwhelmed his rivals by 4.8 lengths over 1100m (0-64) on June 17 before a last-start win over 1200m (0-66) a fortnight ago. Drops 3kg on Saturday which will also help his cause.

This guy has hit the ground running in the tropics after parting ways with the Anthony Cummings stable at Randwick. The four-year-old gelding managed a third at Gosford over 1600m (Class 1) and a fourth at Warwick Farm over 1600m (BM72) in March before heading to the NT. The son of Vancouver managed just one win from 14 starts in NSW, an 1100m maiden at Wyong last November. Captain George started life in Darwin in style with victory over 1200m (BM54) as a $2.35 favourite on June 3 before saluting over 1200m (0-58) as a $1.50 favourite on June 17. Has the outside gate on Saturday.

NEXT BEST AGAIN: DOC O’CONNOR
Doc O’Connor is on fellow three-year-olds after a last-start fourth against his own age group over 1200m (BM64) as a $1.45 favourite on June 10. The son of Lonhro is a lot better than that. Formerly trained in Victoria by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, the gelding found it tough going in Melbourne in four starts despite a win on the synthetic surface at Ballarat in a 1000m maiden and a second over 1000m (BM62) at Morphettville Parks. A win on debut over 1100m (Class 2) in the NT in March was followed by a second over 1000m (Class 2) before a win over the three-year-olds over 1100m (BM57) in May.

This guy had done little wrong in four starts since returning from a seven-month spell in April before disappointing unexpectedly last start over 1200m (Class 2) on June 24 as the $2.45 favourite when finishing sixth. We’re willing to forgive the four-year-old gelding, who was quoted as a $6 hope in midweek. The son of Soobog kicked off his career during the Darwin Cup Carnival last year and won an 1100m maiden, but missed out in his next four starts. Two seconds over 1100m (0-58) in April was followed by a win over 1200m (Class 2) in May before another second over 1000m (0-58) on June 3.
