Can a ‘Rocket’ sink a ‘Sub’? Or will an ‘Angel’ be in seventh heaven?
That’s the conundrum for punters as three provincial stars contest a Hugh Emmerson Memorial heat – Race 5, 8.28pm – at Geelong tonight.
The Watchdog’s Must-Watch race between Rocket Boy (29 from 56 – 3 of past 4) v Carry On Angel (17 from 56 – 5 of past 8) v Russian Sub (11 from 43) is a real poser!
The expert form analyst favours Rocket Boy, who is 5 from 7 Box 3. However, Carry On Angel was 3rd to Tiggerlong Tonk in the G1 Harrison-Dawson and Russian Sub was 3rd in the Wagga Gold Cup Consolation.
Another matchup on this fixture that may have bettors in a quandary is Lots Of Chatter (28 from 78 – 5 of past 9) v Hadouken (9 from 31), also in an Emmerson Memorial heat – Race 4, 8.05pm. And The Watchdog tips Hadouken to talk the talk!
Lots Of Chatter was a G2 Cranbourne Cup finalist, while Hadouken was a G3 Launching Pad finalist.
Additionally, G1 Maturity Classic runner-up Fernando Mick (10 from 38) appears to have a class edge on his rivals in another Emmerson Memorial heat – Race 6, 8.47pm.
And rising star Six Speed Manual (3 from 4), who has commenced his career in overdrive, should ‘push the pedal to the metal’ in Race 10, 10.08pm.
Meanwhile, several topliners showcase today’s Bendigo meeting. None more so than the resuming True Collinda (4 from 8) in Race 4, 3.49pm.
The Jason Thompson-trained potential star is contesting her first start since April 27.
And a couple of tantalising tussles will whet punters’ appetites, starting with Weblec Eagle (13 from 50) v Aston Oriental (6 from 18) in Race 7, 4.57pm.
Weblec Eagle won last year’s G1 Sale Cup and was a G1 Rookie Rebel finalist, while Aston Oriental – a litter sister of superstar Aston Rupee, who smashed Sandown Park’s 515m track record last night – is a serious middle-distance prospect. She’s also trained by Thompson.
And finally, a ‘bubbly’ clash between Typhoon Sammy (13 from 20 – 3 from 3 Box 1) v Soda Prince (11 from 28 – 3 of past 5) – Race 9, 5.37pm. You can guarantee it won’t be a ‘fizzer’!
Ex-NSW flier Typhoon Sammy (6 of past 7) is 2 from 2 since joining the Thompson camp, while Soda Prince was a Pink Diamond Rookie Short Course finalist.

MUST-WATCH RACE: Hugh Emmerson Memorial Heat 2
ROCKET BOY CARRY ON ANGEL RUSSIAN SUB
Geelong Race 5 460m 8:28pm
Form https://watchdog.grv.org.au/meeting/666538951/race/5
The Watchdog says : It should be a great series and this heat is absolutely stacked. ROCKET BOY (3) has been one of the hottest chasers in the state over the past few months and is expected to take a power of beating. His box manners are not great, but he does explode once balanced and with a quick beginner inside and slow beginner outside, he should get plenty of room to move and then be in front after about 50m. He owns a sizzling 25.74sec PB, however I think he can get down to around 25.60sec, so they will have to go to another level to reel him in. CARRY ON ANGEL (7) is all class and appears to be the main danger. He was recently placed in the G3 Darwin Cup final before returning to the winner’s list with an eye-popping 29.21sec Sandown Park win. If he can reproduce that run, he’s likely to prove too strong in the run home. But he can miss the kick at times and may be giving the ‘Rocket’ too much of a head start mid-race. RUSSIAN SUB (8) returned to his best with a dazzling 25.07sec Warrnambool win and must be respected, but I’m a little concerned about the draw. He has raced well from wide draws in the past, but with the abundance of pace drawn inside, he may be posted wide at the bend. If there is to be an upset, it may come from track specialist EL CAZADOR (4). He’s turned in some handy performances lately and is capable of leading or coming from off the pace in his races. So, if the main fancies happen to bump through the bend, he should be there to pounce.

The Watchdog says : WAKE THE DRAGON (8) was handily placed here in his second run since a spell and should now be at peak fitness. He likes to stay wide, so he should gain a clear passage and score. TRUE COLLINDA (2) resumes from a spell and has joined the powerful Thompson kennel, so a forward showing is expected. SPUN OUT (1) is drawn to get the breaks and has been racing with confidence. With a clean getaway, she should finish in the top three.

TAB fixed odds: $1.40 Win

The Watchdog says : MISTY RAINBOW (1) was impressive up the straight last time and is drawn to be prominent throughout. HADOUKEN (6) will appreciate the empty draw inside and should have enough pace to cross and lead them up. STREET RIOT (8) returned to his brilliant best at Healesville two runs back and appears to have a fair bit on his rivals.
Multi price: $3.15
$1 Quaddie – 50% (2 combinations)

Form https://watchdog.grv.org.au/meeting/666538951/race/5
: 3,7
: 4
: 3
: 2
The Watchdog says : Skinny quaddie with ROCKET BOY (3) and CARRY ON ANGEL (7) expected to dominate the first leg, while FERNANDO MICK (4) will appreciate the empty draw on his outside and should get the cash in the second leg. ASTON RHONE (3) was brilliant in his return to the track at The Meadows and looks well graded in the third leg. CARRY ON MAXWELL (2) has the class edge in the last leg, and he’s drawn to get a nice run through at the bend.
$2 Win – ROCKET BOY
Geelong Race 5 Box 3 460m 8:28pm Must Watch Race
TAB fixed odds: $2.70
Form https://watchdog.grv.org.au/meeting/666538951/race/5
The Watchdog says :He’s been racing in blistering form and with a slow beginner on his outside, he should get plenty of room to balance up and assume control. CARRY ON ANGEL (7) is a powerful type, but the ‘Rocket’ should boot away mid-race and that may be enough to see him score.
$1 Win – PEPONI BALE Lucky Longshot
$2 Win – GOLD SKULLTULA
Geelong Race 9 Boxes 6 & 8 460m 9:47pm
TAB fixed odds: $7 (Peponi Bale)
TAB fixed odds: $2.70 (Gold Skulltula)
Form https://watchdog.grv.org.au/meeting/666538951/race/9
The Watchdog says :With the scratching of WESTAR MISTY (3), GOLD SKULLTULA (8) should get a fairly cheap lead and if he can reproduce his scorching 24.87sec run from Sale, he’ll prove extremely hard to reel in. PEPONI BALE (6) is the value runner. He’s been racing well in strong company and possesses a great turn of foot mid-race. With some luck in running, he should be in a threatening position as they turn for home.
