The Cranbourne Turf Club is set to host its final night meeting of the 2021/22 season with eight races set down for judgement on Friday. The track is rated a Good 4, with the rail out 7m, and recent trends suggest it may pay dividends to be up on speed. The night of racing is set to commence at 5:45pm AEST, while the quaddie kicks off at 7:45pm with our best bet of the night.
Best Bet at Cranbourne: Prince Of Mercia
The Clayton Douglas-trained Prince Of Mercia returned from a 14-week spell with a dominant all-the-way victory at Geelong on May 13 and looked to have plenty left in the tank. Back in January, the four-year-old gelding was the best of the beaten brigade behind the smart Midwest, and those form lines have stacked up. Despite being a maiden through nine starts on firmer decks, he has placed six times in those races, including five runner-up efforts. From barrier eight, look for Jake Noonan to roll forward, and if he can find the rail early enough, the race is Prince Of Mercia’s to lose. Take whatever price you can with online bookmakers – he looks a great play.

Next Best at Cranbourne: Gabstar
We were with the Cindy Alderson-trained Gabstar when she resumed at Kyneton off a 37-week spell, but she missed the kick as the gates opened and was never going to threaten after that. With blinkers going on for the first time, we expect it will sharpen her up nicely, and considering she chased home the likes of El Patroness, Barb Raider, Adele Amour and Zarelle in her initial campaign, she clearly has some sort of potential. From barrier one, expect Michael Walker to stalk the leaders wherever they go, and when asked for an effort, look for Gabstar to peel off the fence, let down nicely and ultimately prove too good.

Best Value at Cranbourne: Prince Ziggy
Jamie Edwards and recent Goodwood winner Zac Spain combine in the third leg of the quaddie with Prince Ziggy – a runner we have plenty of time for. With a record of 69: 10-13-9, the eight-year-old gelding is as honest as the day is long, and despite finishing eight lengths back in fourth in the Casterton Cup, we are happy to give him a push in this. Having not won in close to a year, the Monaco Consul gelding has placed four times in his last nine runs in arguably harder races than this. Look for Spain to have him up close to the speed throughout, and considering he will stay all day, Prince Ziggy looks to be a great each-way play with online betting sites.
