Mapperley Stud’s Contributer had a cracker day at Matamata on Wednesday.
Two of the promising young stallion’s lightly-tried three-year-old fillies won impressively with Marina Farina first off the mark to score with a touch of class on debut over 1050m.
Marina Farina had already caught the eye with two dazzling trial wins and she continued her natural progression winning stylishly first up for trainer Darryn Weatherley. Son Sam Weatherley was in the saddle, and gave her a gem of a ride just behind the leaders before angling out to showcase her brilliant turn of foot.
“She drew a sticky gate and she surprised us by beginning so well,” Darryn Weatherley said. “When she landed in a gorgeous spot, we were confident she would finish over top of them.”
“The filly has impressed me the whole way through, she’s well put together and looks like a real racehorse. Her attitude is fantastic, she’s a real professional and it’s a massive thrill to see her win first up.
“She a fantastic worker, she lengthens stride so easily. I’ve ridden a few in my time and she feels like a very good filly.”
In the following race Campionessa kept her unbeaten record in tact when she blitzed her rivals over 1400m. Following a dominant display on debut at Rotorua, the market singled out the Contributer filly as the one to beat and she made easy work of it winning by an impressive three length margin.
Trained by Jamie Richards, the talented filly has taken another massive step towards being highly competitive in the lucrative three-year-old filly races over the summer.
Out of the winning O’Reilly mare Bella Carolina, she is a half-sister to the Wellesley Stakes winner Tennessee and is from the same family as Gr.1 Metropolitan winner Dress Circle. She has a half-brother by first season sire Time Test in Book 1 of the 2021 NZB Yearling Sale.
“It’s been a brilliant day for Contributer, to have two three-year-old fillies win so impressively at our local track is fantastic,” Mapperley Stud’s Simms Davison said. “The feedback from everyone on course is certainly encouraging, he is building up a very good record as a sire.
“The High Chaparral sire line is striking again; he’s leaving them in the same mould and they proving to be very good racehorses.
“We have some really nice yearlings to take up to the sale next year, we expect them to be very popular with buyers after how well his first crop have performed on the racetrack.”
