We’ve got Country Cup racing on Sunday afternoon with the Coonabarabran Showcase Cup, moving one hour west to Coonamble due to the state of the track at its regularly scheduled destination.
The rail at the Coonamble Jockey Club sits in the true position for the nine-race program. While the state of the ground is currently listed as a Soft 7, We expect that to change for cup day with plenty of rain around the region, so we’re doing the form for a possible Heavy 8 come Sunday afternoon.
Racing gets underway at 12:25pm AEST
Coonabarabran Showcase Cup Tip: Point Counterpoint
We’ve gone for the market favourite here in the feature event on Sunday afternoon, Point Counterpoint comes to this race in top form going two-for-two starting this preparation. His win at Tamworth on September 4 by 0.2 lengths on a heavy track was outstanding and provided the scope of this Bull Point gelding going forward, winning again at Canterbury on September 21. He’s now third-up, fit, and looks ready to win again with a favourable speed map, and to carry 60kg in this field is not a concern considering he’s carried weight in country cup races in the past. Brooke Stower takes the ride as she did at Tamworth first-up, and with a mid-field sit and a moderate run-in transit, the Stirling Osland-trained galloper should have too much class for these.

Best Bet: Dubbo Wanderer
We go back a race for the Showcase Sprint in race seven on the card, and we’ve found a very progress four-year-old for the Michael Mulholand yard. This gelding by Wandjina has a great strike rate of nine career starts for four wins, and we’re exciting to be on board for possible win number five. His dominant win at Tamworth on September 4 is just too good to ignore in this field, he destroyed his rivals in C3 by 5.5-lengths and now gets well down in the weight with 53kg after the claim for apprentice Jake Barrett. The best asset of Dubbo Wanderer is his versatility, he can go back or forward and sit anywhere in the run. If they go too quick, he’ll be storming home late to win with something left in the tank. We think he’s very talented and looks to win again, especially if market elect Classy Jaybee goes to Doomben Saturday, take the price for Dubbo Wanderer now.

Next Best Bet: Thespius
Race two on Sunday is our next best bet at a great price with online bookmakers. Thespius is a gelding by Flying Artie having his first career start, and he’s trialled exceptionally well heading into this affair. With the market favourite Star of Kings likely to be scratched, the two first starters for the Brett Thompson stable should dominate in a field of moderate exposed form, and so many unknowns with multiple first-up maidens. We’ve sided with Thespius over stablemate Ithicus due to Jake Pracey-holmes electing to take the ride, he trialled both these gallopers at Scone on October 13. Thespius was hard held throughout his trial and being by Flying Artie, should appreciate the sprinting trip here first up. Pracey-Holmes will be positive from the inside draw, and with a gun run he looks a great bet for us.
