It’s Coonabarabran Cup Day on Friday afternoon with 12 acceptors looking to take out the $75,000 feature set to be run over the 1600m. We are currently listed to be running on a Good 4 surface for this eight-race program; however, with plenty of rain forecast, we’re likely to be getting a downgrade into the Soft range come raceday. The rail sits in the true position for the entire circuit and should be playing relatively fair throughout proceedings. The first race is set to get us underway at 1:15pm AEDT.
Coonabarabran Cup Tip: High Court
The 1600m feature looks a race between three key chances, with our top pick being the Rodney Northam-trained High Court. He’s had two starts under the new stable and seems to be progressing nicely this preparation. After a forgive run first-up where he missed the start, his second-up effort over the 1400m at Randwick on December 10 was outstanding. On that day he travelled wide without cover throughout to only be beaten 2.6 lengths behind Democracy Manifest at BM78 level. He drew barrier 12 of 13 on that occasion, and on Friday we get a much more suitable gate in barrier one. While the 62kg does look a hefty task, his form is too strong to ignore in this company. Jockey Grant Buckley takes the reins, as he did last preparation when winning a Tamworth feature as well, so he knows this seven-year-old by Star Witness very well. From a soft draw, High Court will give us every chance of beating home main rivals Beckford and Knife’s Edge.

Best Bet at Coonabarabran: Seahaven
Race three is where you can find our best bet with the Paul Messara-trained gelding Seahaven. He is a progressive type with just four career starts for two wins and a minor placing to his name and should be competitive in Class 3 company on Friday afternoon. After winning first-up, the stable found a BM58 at Scone on December 9 which looked another nice race for this son of Mikki Isle; however, things never went to plan that day from barrier 13 as Seahaven got cast wide throughout on speed and just petered out late to run third by a half-length. He draws barrier 10 on Friday, and while this may seem like a negative, this time Donovan Dillon will look to slot in somewhere midfield with just the 12 runners accepted for this contest. He should be able to find some cover and allow this four-year-old to show his turn of foot late.

Next Best at Coonabarabran: Wandering Jack
Wandering Jack is yet to hit the racetrack and looks a proper horse based on his single barrier trial on his home circuit in Dubbo on December 9, where he was under a stranglehold by jockey Chelsea Ings before looming large on his stablemate in the 860m jumpout. It’s always risk taking a first starter over some well-tried gallopers, but we’re hoping to get a nice price with online bookmakers for this son of Territories as the likes of Gunfighter will be well found by punters. Ings will be looking to be somewhere midfield with cover before exposing this three-year-old gelding late to score. If he brings his trial form to the track, he looks very hard to beat in this 1200m contest.
