Last season’s Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) winner, Coco Sun, is set for her second spring outing in Saturday’s Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield.
Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, the four-year-old mare returned with a solid seventh-place finish in a Benchmark 100 (1400m) at Caulfield last month, finishing 2.8 lengths behind winner Another Wil.
“I was happy with her return. She ran a really solid last furlong and didn’t get a lot of room,” Calvin McEvoy told Racing.com.
“Blake (Shinn, jockey) was really pleased with her though; he could only really give her one hit with the stick.
“It was a good return run over seven furlongs for a staying mare. Our main aim is the Caulfield Cup, but her form needs to warrant a go at that of course.
“We’d just love a little bit of rain around (before Saturday); she goes to another level when she can get her toe in.
We think she’s going good enough to be competitive, we’re expecting a nice run from her up to the 1800 metres.”
