Smokin’ Romans has not tasted success since his victory in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) in 2022, yet he showed last campaign that he still has plenty of life left in his legs. If Ethan Brown can get him out of the barriers cleanly, this eight-year-old gelding will give his rivals something to chase in a race that lacks speed influences. The Chris Waller-trained Quantum Cat has not won in close to a year, but he has hardly run a poor race in that time. He was a touch unlucky when held up for a run over 2000m at this track on September 21; with clear air, he could have finished closer than 1.4 lengths away. The son of Kitten’s Joy will need a touch of luck from barrier three, but if he gets that, Quantum Cat can turn the tables on his rivals.

During his three-year-old spring campaign last year, Nadal finished a half-length off Cylinder in Group 2 company and then three lengths off Militarize in the Golden Rose a fortnight later. That form is more than good enough to be competitive in this 1100m BM78. His return at Flemington a month ago showed there was improvement to come, and if he can put it all together second-up, Nadal will be serving it up to his rivals.
