Black-type racing returns to Caulfield on Saturday as the Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) headlines a competitive nine-race card. It has been a wet week in Melbourne, and an upgrade from the Soft 7 track rating looks unlikely. The rail sticks to its true position, with the action commencing at 12:05pm AEST.
Sir John Monash Stakes Tip: Ashford Street
Ashford Street was touch unlucky at Flemington on June 22, but his Caulfield record is strong. A two-time winner already at the course, including three starts back in BM90 company, the son of Moshe is sure to appreciate the sting out of the deck. With seven wins and six minor placings from 21 starts on rain-affected ground, the conditions are set to suit him perfectly.

Best Bet at Caulfield: He’s Beset
He’s Beset has a win and two runner-up finishes from three starts this campaign, including a first-up win at the Caulfield 1400m on May 11. Barrier 19 is offset by his desire to settle up on speed, and with Blake Shinn in the saddle once again, this guy is expected to be prominent throughout. With a touch of luck, He’s Beset should prove too good for his BM78 rivals.

Next Best at Caulfield: Little Jack
Little Jack is a nice stayer going through the grades. The four-year-old gelding has won three of his four starts this time in, including a dominant 2.8-length victory at the Caulfield 2000m — the course and distance he competes at on the weekend. He goes up 2.5kg on that effort, but with a clear appreciation for wet tracks and with Jason Maskiell sticking on board, Little Jack looks hard to go past.

Best Value at Caulfield: Lovazou
Horse betting sites have the opener down to a race in two, but Lovazou looms as a genuine threat to Miss Roumbini and Enna’s Dream. She comes into this off an impressive Class 1 victory at Ballarat on June 12, which was her first start since finishing midfield in Group 3 company during the spring. Carleen Hefel sticks on board, and in the small field, Lovazou will be close enough to strike as she unleashes down the heart of the track.
