Friday night racing is set to go around at Canterbury Park in Sydney. The track is rated a Heavy 8, and the rail is out +3m for the entire course. The first race is set to jump at 5:45pm. Here are four free Canterbury tips and quaddie selections for January 8.

Best Bet – Race 8 #1 Perigord $4.40

We’ll be up all night waiting for our good thing to go around, but we think it should be worth it when Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou leg up Robbie Dolan aboard Perigord. The son of I Am Invincible loves racing at Canterbury and goes super over 1100m. The five-year-old gelding resumed with a good effort on the Kensington track a month ago when fourth over 1000m, so he should go well here with a few meters in his legs. Onto a wet track, up in trip and drawn the inside alley should suit him down to the ground here and the $4.40 on offer with Aussie bookies is very enticing.

Next Best – Race 7 #8 Maui Girl $4.40

Maui Girl was our best value just seven days ago at this track and distance when she was heavily backed, eventually jumping at $5 favourite, only to run third. It’ll be a similar story this week, with Jess Taylor retaining the ride and staying at 57.5kg in Benchmark 72 grade. She’s drawn a bit nicer here in gate 3, so she should be able to find the box seat and be presented with every chance in the straight. The Lope de Vega mare is a two-time winner on soft tracks, but hasn’t fired a shot on heavy going in four throws at the stumps, so that is some slight concern. She’s fit and racing well, so we expect her to be fighting out the finish.

Best Value – Race 5 #8 Mcgeehan $8

Paul Cave and Kathy O’Hara combine in the fifth with four-year-old gelding Mcgeehan. Coming off a good second to the talented Foxborough a fortnight ago, the son of Excelebration looks in a good vein of form which should see him competitive here. He’s got a 100% place strike rate on soft tracks, so he should handle the heavy going on Friday which he’ll see for the first time. From barrier 3, O’Hara will take him forward and settle just on the leader’s backs. If they don’t overdo it, he’ll be hard to beat here.

Value BetRace 6 – Nemingah (#6) $8 with Sportsbet
