Canterbury Stakes attracts star-studded field

The Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) is the second of back-to-back Group 1 features at Randwick on Saturday afternoon, with the $750,000 prize attracting a quality field of 12.

The top of the market can’t be split by horse racing betting sites, with the trio of Switzerland, Magic Time and Sunshine In Paris all installed as equal $4.60 favourites.

It will be left in punters hands to decide what form-lines to follow, with two of the three favoured runners last-start winners.

Magic Time returned an impressive winner of the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 15, while Sunshine In Paris bloused her rivals in the Group 1 Champions Sprint (1200m) at the end of last preparation.

Meanwhile, the Chris Waller-trained Switzerland returns to Sydney and will be looking to bounce back after a lacklustre performance in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 15.

The Bjorn Baker-trained Stefi Magnetica isn’t far away at the $6.00 with BlondeBet as she returns after a 119-day spell, while Here To Shock returns to Australia after tasting Group 1 success across the ditch.

Double-figure odds are available about every other runner with Dabble, including two-time Group 1 winning colt Ceolwulf ($11.00) who heads into this contest second-up after missing last Saturday’s Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m).

The chances don’t end there, however, with the pair of Militarize and Royal Patronage representing terrific each-way value at the $15.00 apiece

The 2025 Canterbury Stakes is the eighth race on the Randwick program and is scheduled to get underway at 4:30pm AEDT.
