We’re back racing under lights at Canterbury on Friday night with a competitive eight-race program from 6:30pm AEDT. The rail has moved out +4m for the entire circuit, with a Good 4 track expected for the evening of racing. Traditionally, you want to look for horses with early speed to find prominent spots in the run, so let’s try and back some winners heading into the weekend.
Best Bet: Huon
We were with Huon last time he won at Canterbury, getting home by 0.2 lengths on November 25, and he finds another winnable race when staying at the 1250m at BM72 level. He was game that night when forced to track outside the leader before putting the head down, and this race sets up very similarly. However, this time Huon should be able to sit in behind what looks a hot tempo on paper, before Zac Lloyd pulls Huon out to the middle of the track late to score. Kir Royale looks one of the main dangers but has a horror draw, so we think Huon should get very opportunity to make it back-to-back wins at Canterbury.
Best Bet
Race 8 – #7 Huon (1)
4yo Gelding | T: James Cummings | J: Zac Lloyd (a2) (60.5kg)

Next Best: Fielding
The fifth race on the card looks a very classy affair with six of the nine acceptors being last-start winners; however, we’re going with a horse that ran into second last time out. This four-year-old gelding was good enough first-up behind Walkintalkin’ at Warwick Farm on November 23 to suggest he can take big improvement in this second-up tilt. He gets the 2kg claim of apprentice Zac Lloyd again as he sticks after riding Fielding first-up, which gives us great confidence he’s going as well as the performance looked to the eye. That’s without mentioning the consistency of this galloper, who has found the frame in eight of his nine starts. Look for this son of Deep Field to track the leaders early before producing late to find the line strongly again.
Next Best
Race 5 – #2 Fielding (1)
4yo Gelding | T: Damien Lane | J: Zac Lloyd (a2) (58.5kg)

Best Value: Himalaism
The Chris Waller-trained Himalaism comes here second-up after a stint up in Queensland. When resuming at Doomben on November 16 he showed an electric turn of foot to fly into fourth, beaten under a length. His two-year-old form reads strong as well with close margins behind the likes of Troach, Fireburn and Honey Pot, all of which would be competitive in this company. Obviously, he’s still a six-start maiden for a reason, although he has had excuses and today looks his best opportunity to get that first career win. Brenton Avdulla should search for the box seat from barrier seven, and when asked for an effort, this son of I Am Invincible shouldn’t be too far off his rivals to salute late.
