HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst brings you his best bets and suggested quaddie numbers for Wednesday’s seven-race meeting at Canterbury Park. The track is rated a Heavy 8, the rail is in the true position for the entire course, and the first race of the afternoon is scheduled to jump at 12:50pm AEST.
Canterbury Best Bet – Maritima
If you were on Maritima in her debut, don’t go back and watch the replay – it was a deadset horror watch. The Chris Waller-trained two-year-old got a long way over 1200m and simply should have won the race, but instead Nash Rawiller rode her for luck and she only saw clear air late. The filly by Merchant Navy sprouted wings in the concluding stages and flew late to run third. Now out to 1250m and drawn in barrier four, Rawiller will hopefully show a little more intent on her early, put her in a handy position and let her prove that she is the best horse in the race.
Best Bet
Race 2 – #6 Maritima (4)
2yo Filly | T: Chris Waller | J: Nash Rawiller (56.5kg)

Canterbury Next Best – Wolves
Three-year-old filly Wolves won’t get a better chance to win her maiden than this on Wednesday. The Anthony Mountney-trained daughter of Wolf Cry is resuming following two good trial wins at Gosford and Randwick respectively, with Hugh Bowman in the saddle for her most recent outing. Although she wasn’t competitive in the races, the stable had enough of an opinion of her to line her up in the Group 2 Furious Stakes and the Listed Reginald Allen Quality last preparation. Bowman can be handy from barrier two, put her into the race early and ride her like the best horse in the 1250m event. Start 10 looks like the right time for Wolves to break through.
Next Best
Race 3 – #10 Wolves (2)
3yo Filly | T: Anthony Mountney | J: Hugh Bowman (55kg)

Canterbury Value Bet – Tags
Tags might only be a country-trained galloper coming out of a Class 3 Highway, but the Gayna Williams runner does get conditions to suit on Wednesday. The four-year-old son of Sidestep has a terrific finish on him, so we often see him run very good races – as his 13:3-1-4 record suggests. Tags has finished third in each of his three starts on heavy tracks, while two of his three career wins have been on soft tracks. Drawn in barrier one, Grant Buckley will have to ride for luck in the last race of the afternoon, but if the track does chop up, a saloon passage could be presented in the straight. This is a nice race for Tags to win in the city, and the online bookies are giving us each-way odds about him.
