Eight races will be run at Canterbury Park this Friday evening, so HorseBetting’s New South Wales form analyst has picked out his best bets and free quaddie numbers for the meeting. The track is rated a Good 4 and the rail is out 4m for the entire course, while the first race of the night will jump at 6pm AEDT.
Canterbury Best Bet – Trifaccia
James Cummings saddles up his three-year-old filly Trifaccia in a bid to get her maiden out of the way at start six. The talented daughter of I Am Invincible has a habit of over-racing which has cost her victory on more than one occasion; however, Cummings has elected to take the nose roll off for the first time, while Sydney’s top front-running rider, Tim Clark, has been booked for the ride, which means we could see her allowed to roll along in front rather than get snagged back and try to settle like we have seen in her first five runs. Should that be the tactic, it could play right into her favour, especially from barrier 10 and at a track like Canterbury. Trifaccia is already placed at Group 2 level, while she has mixed it with some of the top fillies in the country, so she should find this a lot easier.
Next Best at Canterbury – Flying Witness
In the opening race of the night, Tim Clark hops aboard another promising three-year-old filly in Flying Witness. This daughter of Star Witness actually ran sixth in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes as a two-year-old – the same race that Trifaccia ran third in. Flying Witness has only had two runs since then: a ninth in the Group 3 Baillieu Handicap at the end of her two-year-old campaign, and a solid third first-up on the Kensington track at Randwick. James McDonald rode her that day and gave her a beautiful run behind the leaders, and although they gave a kick at the top of the straight which made the eventual winner and runner-up too hard to run down, this filly closed off very nicely. Flying Witness has had one start at this track in the past and ran fourth behind Bacchanalia, who was a dominant winner at Randwick on Saturday. She steps out to 1550m from 1300m and should take plenty of benefit from her first-up run, which will make her very hard to beat in the opener.
Best Value at Canterbury – Karlstad
In the second leg of the Canterbury quaddie, Chris Waller and Lee Magorrian combine with the in-form gelding Karlstad. The four-year-old son of Sacred Falls had been doing his racing in Queensland of late, which saw him win back-to-back races over 1800m in November at Eagle Farm and the Sunshine Coast respectively. Waller has since taken him back to New South Wales, where he has had one run for a fourth at Rosehill Gardens on December 4 in a 3YO & 4YO Benchmark 72. He stays in the same grade, but this race is open to all ages and he’s been handed an extra 1kg for his troubles, so we might get a good each-way quote for this stayer on the rise. Drawn out in barrier 11, Magorrian will take Karlstad back and let him storm home at the end of the 1900m journey. There is a fair amount of speed in this race, so he should be able to finish off strongly.
