The Willie Mullins-trained Vauban is the first of two runners his stable has elected to bring to the 2023 Melbourne Cup and has been the long-standing bookmaker favourite for the race since dominating his European rivals.
He won by an astonishing seven lengths at Royal Ascot in the Class 2 Copper Horse Handicap (2816m) leading all the way and outstaying his opposition to the wire. He then took on the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes (2414m) at the Curragh on August 7, securing his place in the race that stops the nation.
Vauban will gain the services of one of the world’s best jockeys Ryan Moore, and with barrier three only aiding his chance, Vauban is a justified favourite for the Melbourne Cup.

The five-year-old gelding is well-weighted in this year’s Cup, with 55kgs unlikely to hinder his winning chances. Ryan Moore makes his way down under for the ride, with his last Melbourne Cup success coming in 2019 aboard Magic Wand.
