The Robert Hickmott-trained Point Nepean won his way into the 2022 Melbourne Cup when claiming The Andrew Ramsden Stakes during the autumn.
Having strung together three straight wins during his autumn campaign, Point Nepean was touted as a genuine winning hope in the Melbourne Cup.
However, Point Nepean has been a shadow of his former self so far this spring campaign, beaten close to five-lengths to High Emocean first-up and only managed to beat one runner home in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield on October 8, beaten six-lengths.
You cannot rule out any stayer owned by Lloyd Williams who is one of the most noticeable figures in horse racing. He has owned or part-owned five Melbourne Cup winners: Just A Dash (1981), What A Nuisance (1985), Efficient (2007), Green Moon (2012) and Almandin (2016). Williams also won the Caulfield Cup with Fawkner in 2013.
When will Point Nepean run in the Melbourne Cup?
The Melbourne Cup will be run on the first Tuesday in November at Flemington in front of a sold out crowd for the first time in 2019.
The one thing that hasn’t changed about the 2022 Melbourne Cup is the horses.
Once again The Cup has brought together an elite field of Melbourne Cup horses to contest the two mile race for $7.75 million.

Can Point Nepean win The Cup?
The second of the Robert Hickmott runners in the Melbourne Cup – Point Nepean – is nowhere near the form that saw him claim The Andrew Ramsden during the autumn to book a spot in the Cup. He was beaten by five-lengths when first-up over 2500m and only beat one runner home in the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) last time out. Point Nepean will be lucky to beat a runner home on exposed form.
