Can Gold Trip win the 2022 Melbourne Cup?

The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Gold Trip has long been touted as a potential Melbourne Cup horse and he gets his chance to compete in the 2022 Melbourne Cup.

Having finished a narrow second in the Caulfield Cup two starts back, the six-year-old simply had no luck in the Cox Plate last time out when finishing ninth of 12.

He needs to carry the topweight of 57.5kg in the Cup and despite having just one win to his name so far in his career, Gold Trip is deemed to be a big chance heading into the race that stops the nation

When will Gold Trip run in the Melbourne Cup?

The Melbourne Cup will be run on the first Tuesday in November at Flemington in front of a sold out crowd for the first time since 2019.

The one thing that hasn’t changed about the 2022 Melbourne Cup is the horses.

Once again The Cup has brought together an elite field of Melbourne Cup horses to contest the two mile race for $7.75 million.

Can Gold Trip win The Cup?

The top weight in the 2022 Melbourne Cup is the Caulfield Cup runner up, Gold Trip. The five-year-old from the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace yard was a hard watch for those who backed him in the Cox Plate, but his run in the Caulfield Cup has him right in a race like the Melbourne Cup. The five-year-old looks set to handle the rain-affected track with great aplomb and with Mark Zahra on board from barrier 14 is sure to be given a peach of a steer. The standout fault for Gold Trip, coming into a race like this, is he has won just once in 15 attempts and been placed on eight other occasions. It seems the wetter the better for Gold trip and if Mark Zahra can have him settled with cover in the moving line, his second career victory might just come in a Melbourne Cup.
