After missing the iconic Birdsville Carnival in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, patrons will return to the remote Queensland town for the 2021 Birdsville Cup – run in 2022. Seven races will be run and won on Monday, including the Birdsville Cup, so Queensland’s racing analyst has studied the form and brings you his top picks and bets for the program. The rail is in the true position, while the dirt track is rated Good. The first of seven will jump at 1:08pm AEST.
Birdsville Cup Best Bet – Echo Point
Just a field of seven will do battle in the $42,000 Birdsville Cup, with all seven of those horses having their first look at the track. Todd Austin has a great record when taking horses to Birdsville, and he saddles up Echo Point in the 2021 Cup. The son of Sebring won his maiden 12 months ago at Kembla Grange when with Waterhouse & Bott, but he now resides at Austin’s Barcaldine stable. The four-year-old defeated warhorse Fab’s Cowboy last time out at Longreach by over six lengths, so that looks the right form line for this. He should get a nice run from barrier four and give Austin another Birdsville Cup.
Best Bet at Birdsville – Ela Beach
Mackay trainer John Manzellman has travelled a swag of horses to the state’s far west for the two-day carnival, and we think he can be rewarded with a win on Monday with Ela Beach. The tiny little grey mare may be small in stature, but she has a very big heart and has plenty of ticker. The four-year-old has been in and around the money in her past few starts, running well at Rockhampton and Mackay. She will go forward from barrier four and be in the right spot to lead all of the way over the 1000m.
Next Best at Birdsville – Past Tense
Despite having to lug 63kg, Past Tense looks mighty hard to beat in race five at Benchmark 55 level over the mile. The Todd Austin-trained gelding was good last time out when beating No Inuendo at Barcaldine by 1.25 lengths over 1300m. Ric McMahon has ridden the son of Wandjina twice for one win, so he is likely to look to repeat the dose from last start when he rolled along to win well. He is the testing material in this race.
