Bendigo racing preview

What Bendigo Races
Where Bendigo Jockey Club – Heinz St, White Hills VIC 3550
When Sunday, June 19, 2022
First Race 11:20am AEST

Racing heads to Bendigo Jockey Club on Sunday afternoon for what looks to be a competitive nine-part card. Considering winter has well and truly set in, we are poised to be racing on a Heavy 9. With the rail out 9m all the way round, the inside ground will likely chop up over the course of the afternoon, so as the day progresses it might pay to look for those drawn a little wider.

Read on to see our best bets and quaddie selections for the Bendigo races, kicking off at 11:20am AEST.

Best Bet at Bendigo – Toyz On Fire

In the opening leg of the quaddie, Toyz On Fire will be having her first start for the Robert Hickmott yard. The four-year-old mare – formerly with the Tony & Calvin McEvoy stable – is armed with a strong finishing burst when at her best, and both of her career wins have come when first-up. One of those wins came on a Soft 5 earlier in her career, but this will be the first time she is faced with heavy going. She brings an impressive form line, beaten under two lengths by the progressive Flying Mascot when first-up last campaign, and if she is anywhere near that type of effort, the Fighting Sun mare looks the one to beat. Alana Kelly hops on board, which is an added bonus, and despite needing to carry 60.5kg, Toyz On Fire looks a clear best bet of the day.

Next Best at Bendigo – Celestial Sol

Now with Maddie Raymond, the formerly Chris Waller-trained Celestial Sol returned in impressive style for his new stable when running home strongly on a Heavy 9 at Sandown on June 1. His maiden victory came on a Heavy 9 at Moonee Valley in July 2020, and despite winning just one other time since then, he has been competitive in harder races than what he faces on Sunday. From barrier eight, we expect Billy Egan to look for cover midfield one off the rail. Celestial Sol is armed with a strong turn of foot on his day and looks a great each-way play with online betting sites.

Best Value at Bendigo – Gabstar

There is no doubt we have a nice opinion of the Cindy Alderson-trained Gabstar and based off her maiden win at Cranbourne, we anticipate she will go on with the job here on Sunday. The three-year-old filly appreciated the application of blinkers for the first time and managed to put 1.5 lengths on her rivals and looked like she had a fair bit left in the locker. From barrier two, Michael Walker will most likely need to get the Star Witness filly away from the inside rail and if he can do so, her race fitness and turn of foot looks to be key in a race like this. I Like Big Putts will make sure this is a genuinely run 1400m event, but armed with a strong finishing burst, we expect Gabstar will be too hard to hold out at a nice price with online bookmakers.

Race 4 – Silk #4 Gabstar (2)

3yo Filly | T: Cindy Alderson | J: Michael Walker (56kg)
