Victorian horse racing heads to Benalla on Monday afternoon where a competitive nine-race program is set down for decision. Close to perfect conditions are set to greet punters and competitors and despite the track coming up a Soft 5, we expect to be racing on a Good 4 at some point on raceday. We kick off the day of racing at 1:30pm AEDT, where the rail is in the true position throughout.
Best Bet at Benalla: Signal
We do not need to wait too long for our best bet of the day as the Matt Laurie-trained Signal steps out in the second event. Despite being an eight-start maiden, the four-year-old gelding continues to put the writing on the wall and stepping out of a strong maiden at Pakenham on February 9 when finishing fourth, gets no better chance to break his maiden then what he does on Monday. First up from a spell at Geelong on January 13, the son of Danerich led throughout, only to be gunned down late. Having drawn barrier 15 for the assignment, look for Thomas Stockdale to take luck out of the equation and have Signal lead the field up. If he can the pole or at worst settle outside leader, it should prove to be a winning manoeuvre and bring up an overdue maiden success.

Next Best at Benalla: Shearman Dyer
In what might be deemed a throw at the stumps by some, the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Shearman Dyer looks one of the nicer plays of the day on Monday. The four-year-old gelding got too far out of his ground at Ararat on February 5, but made up a stack of ground late to finish three-lengths off the winner. The results read much better than what it might do on paper, as the son of Teofilo was held up for a run at a crucial point when moving through the gears. He was clearly doing his best work late, so the step up to the 1406m second-up from a spell looks ideal. If Ben Allen can have him in clear air from barrier four at the right time, Shearman Dyer looks to present great value at around the $5 mark with online bookmakers.

Best Value at Benalla: Written Royalty
We will be looking to strike some value in the penultimate race of the day when the Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock-trained Written Royalty looks to build on his maiden win when fresh last time out. The three-year-old son of Written Tycoon was a smart winner at this track on January 29 over the 1106m and was seemingly doing his best work late, so the step up to 1206m should be no hassle. He was afforded a gun run in transit that day and from barrier six on Monday should gain a similar run. Fred Kersley sticks which is an added bonus and despite needing to lug 61.5kg, if he produces a similar turn of foot to what he showed here last time out, then the $13 with online betting sites looks the wrong price in our eyes.
