What Belmont Oaks Day 2022
Where Belmont Park Racecourse – Saintly Entrance, Burswood WA 6100
When Saturday, July 2, 2022
First Race 12:01pm AWST

It is Belmont Oaks Day this Saturday, with the three-year-olds stealing the limelight on the nine-race card. HorseBetting’s Western Australian racing analyst provides you with his best bet in both the Listed Aquanita Stakes (2000m) and Listed Belmont Oaks (2000m), as well as his top tips for the remainder of the program. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is in the true position, and the first race is scheduled to jump at 12:01pm AWST.

Aquanita Stakes Best Bet – Black Fantasy

Both three-year-old features have short-priced favourites who come out of the Listed Belmont Guineas (1600m) last start, and in the colts and geldings race, it is Black Fantasy who heads the betting. The Daniel & Ben Pearce-trained gelding ran third at big odds at the end of last prep in the Group 2 WA Derby (2400m), before resuming with a third in the Raconteur Stakes (1400m) and third in the Guineas. This is a much easier race compared to what he’s been racing in, so we expect him to finally get in the winner’s circle at this level.

Belmont Oaks Best Bet – Searchin’ Rocs

While Black Fantasy comes off a last-start third in the Belmont Guineas, Searchin’ Rocs finished second in that race. The David Harrison-trained filly by Awesome Rock has won five of her 11 starts, including the Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes over the mile last November. The three-year-old has superior form heading into this Listed event, so at level weights, we expect class to take her a very long way. From barrier seven, Kyra Yuill will have her settle down wherever she’s comfortable and give her every chance to get the job done at the business end.

Best Bet at Belmont – Startrade

Startrade got the job done for us a fortnight ago, so we aren’t going to drop off him in what is another winnable race. The five-year-old gelding by Trade Fair loves it here at Belmont, winning his past two races at this track, so Saturday will be her shot at a hat-trick. Trained by Daniel Morton and to be ridden by Chris Parnham from barrier nine, Startrade is more than likely going to be ridden cold and saved for one final shot at them. His past two wins have been over 1200m and 1400m respectively, so he looks ready to take it to the mile now.

Best Value at Belmont – Mood Swings

In the penultimate race, George Dupre saddles up consistent five-year-old gelding Mood Swings. The son of War Chant has finished in the top three on 14 occasions from 25 starts, with three of those top-three efforts coming from his four first-up runs. To be ridden by apprentice jockey Keshaw Dhurun, Mood Swings should be able to control the race from gate nine with 58kg on his back. Last preparation, the galloper had form around Buzzoom and Watch Me Dance, which can also be tied through Searchin’ Rocs, and that looks good for a Rating 72 Handicap. This is a good race for Mood Swings to resume in.
