Listed racing heads to Belmont once again on Saturday, where the three-year-olds will do battle in the $125,000 Belmont Classic over 2200m. HorseBetting’s WA racing analyst brings you his best bet in the feature, as well as his top picks and quaddie selections throughout the course of the 10-race program. The track is rated a Soft 5, the rail is out 6m for the entire course, and the first of race of the afternoon is scheduled for 11:34am AWST.
Belmont Classic Best Bet – Black Fantasy
Black Fantasy was a deserving winner of the Listed Aquanita Stakes a fortnight ago over 2000m, sitting off the leader and pulling away to record a quarter-length victory. The son of Blackfriars was previously placed in the WATC Derby, Raconteur Stakes and Belmont Guineas, so he had superior form heading into his last-start win – hence the long odds-on quote. He is a bit more of a backable price with online bookmakers on Saturday, so we are keen to be with him again. The extra furlong should suit the Daniel & Ben Pearce-trained three-year-old, and at set weights, he should win again.

Best Bet at Belmont – Aztec Ruler
Two-year-old Aztec Ruler looked ultra-impressive when saluting on debut over 1000m at Belmont, jumping out of the ground in the concluding stages to win in the shadows of the post. Trainer Stefan Vahala has now opted to step the son of Universal Ruler out to 1200m, which should only suit him more. Chris Parnham has stayed in the saddle, which is pleasing to see, and this race doesn’t have any standout gallopers in the field, so we are expecting Aztec Ruler to keep his unbeaten record intact.

Best Value at Belmont – Ruuca
Former Queensland galloper Ruuca has found his way to Perth, joining the Chris & Michael Gangemi stable. The lightly raced five-year-old gelding has shown a fair amount of promise, winning three races and placing eight times from 18 starts. The son of Rubick ran second in a recent trial at Belmont and is a winner first-up in the past. Only three starts ago, Ruuca finished third to Tycoon Evie, who won the Group 3 Pam O’Neill Stakes at Doomben on Saturday, and that looks the right formline for this Rating 66 Handicap. We are happy to be with the Queenslander in his Western Australian debut.
