Kiwi import Bellman (NZ) (Belardo) got off the mark in fine style when winning a 1400m maiden on debut at Hamilton by an effortless four lengths for trainer Lindsey Smith.
The three-year-old gelding by Belardo was an impressive Foxton trials winner as a two-year-old for trainer Chrissy Bambry before his private sale to clients of Brad Spicer.
Showing good gate speed under Jarrod Fry, Bellman sat outside the leader for much of the contest before dashing away in the straight to defeat stablemate My Sienna May in the manner of a horse that will appreciate even further.
“Jarrod rode him perfectly. We didn’t give him any instructions, just that we thought he was good enough and would go on the (Soft6) ground,” stable representative Shane Jackson said.
“He will probably go out in trip again so he rode him accordingly and he did it really well and the second horse was good too.
“He likes the wet ground, will get over a trip and he is another one sourced by Brad (Spicer) out of New Zealand. He is a lovely type.”
Out of the winning Volksraad mare Maneo Invictus, Bellman is by the young Lope De Vega sire Belardo, who stands at Haunui Farm and is represented by 23 yearlings at the forthcoming Karaka Sales.
