Manzoice’s finishing burst to win the Victoria Derby at Flemington was so good, jockey Michael Dee compared it to Durston’s triumph in the Caulfield Cup two weeks ago.
Once again and just like the Caulfield Cup, master trainer Chris Waller had his $21 outsider expertly prepared for Saturday’s triumph in the Group 1 staying race over 2500m and worth $2 million.
“Somewhat (similar to Durston’s victory). This bloke had to do it a bit tougher to get to that position where he didn’t get bumped throughout,” Dee told racing.com.
“And today we were getting bumped from the inside and outside.
“So he did a great job.
“He’s a big, strong horse. When he got to the outside he really let rip, and I was always confident that he was going to be strong in the last furlong.”
Waller’s foreperson Jo Taylor was full of praise for the great conditioner.
“Chris has got such fantastic systems in order,” she said.
“It takes such a team effort to get horses to this stage.
“We got him over here and we’re so thankful.
“We got him to settle into our routine – just keep him happy and ticking over.
“Once again, Chris has shown what a master he is with travelling these horses.”

Taylor said Waller’s secret was not cramming in any last-minute preparations.
“Just keeping their bodies nice and supple and taking them for a few light workouts,” she said.
“We know the fitness is there, so it’s not luck – we won’t change anything in seven days.
“Especially not with what Chris sends you.
“Just keeping a happy horse. Chris is confident that this trip wouldn’t be a problem.”
She was also delighted with Dee’s well-timed ride home.
“Again, Mickey just rode him terrific,” she said.
“And he’s riding with so much confidence and he’s been working so hard for a good few years now.
“It’s well deserved.”
