The synthetic track season gets underway in Victoria when Ballarat Turf Club hosts the first of about 40 meetings throughout the state on synthetic tracks. Horsebetting’s Victorian form expert is confident he can steer you into a few winners to kickstart the working week.

Racing is set to commence at 1pm AEST, with the rail in the true position throughout.

Best Bet at Ballarat – Starsella

We do not need to wait too long for our best bet of the day, as the Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Starsella steps out in the opening event over 1000m. The three-year-old filly managed to lead the field up at Mildura on April 26, where she was nabbed in the shadows of the winning post to finish second by a neck. She showed plenty of early dash from the barriers, so if she can repeat that, then barrier 12 should be no deterrent to her winning chances. We expect to see Blaike McDougall settle the Star Witness filly outside the expected leader Miss Cumberland and with race fitness on her side, we anticipate Starsella will be too hard to gun down late. We’re happy to dabble at the $3.40 on offer with online betting sites.

Next Best at Ballarat – Mr Mischief

The Paul Jones-trained Mr Mischief is somewhat of a synthetic specialist boasting a record of 5: 2-2-1 including a win and two seconds at the Ballarat 2100m. He will need to lug 64kg and Vlad Duric, but considering he got the job done with 62kg on his back in impressive fashion at Swan Hill two starts ago, it should be too much of an issue. We expect Duric will want to be aggressive from the barriers and have the six-year-old gelding settled in the first half a dozen in the moving line. If he is afforded that luxury, we know he will handle the conditions and will stay all day. The $4.20 with online bookmakers is a ridiculous price in our opinion.

Best Value at Ballarat – Ronay

From one synthetic specialist to another. The Patrick Payne-trained Ronay boasts a career record of 21: 7-4-2 on the synthetic including four wins and four minor placings from 10 starts at the Ballarat 1200m. Despite drawing the widest barrier (13) Tatum Bull will look to have her mount settled just off midfield with cover and with plenty of early speed engaged, the race should be perfectly set up for Ronay to finish over the top of her rivals. The $16 with Ladbrokes is too good a price to pass up for a horse who has missed the minor money on just two occasions from 10 goes at the track and trip.

Best Value

Race 7 – Silk #4 Ronay (13)

6yo Mare | T: Patrick Payne | J: Tatum Bull (a1.5) (62.5kg)

$16 with Ladbrokes
