Big day in the career of Nathan Purdon

By Jonny Turner Nathan Purdon can make his own mark and add to his family’s incredible harness racing legacy if Akuta can complete a perfect New Zealand Cup preparation at Addington on Tuesday. Purdon is in search of his first win in the country’s greatest harness race, an event his father and training partner Mark has dominated over the past decade. The casual harness racing fan may assume the younger of the Purdon pairing is very much the junior partner in their training partnership, but they might be surprised to…

Welcome to IRT New Zealand Cup day – Akuta is the horse to beat

For all the talent of the 15 starters and the people who have honed them for what is still New Zealand harness racing’s Holy Grail, today’s Cup may be just that simple. The Kiwi horse with everything versus the Aussie horse with nothing…

Hard work pays off for Balfour trainers at Wyndham

By Jonny Turner Balfour trainers Shane Matheson and Lisa Barrie are enjoying the calm before the storm. Hurrell looks a good hope of heading north in winning form if his drives at Wyndham stand up to their form. Louie’s Girl was a big winner first up for the Craig Ferguson…

By Mike Love Pinseeker turned heads yesterday at Rangiora when he won on debut in race three the Robyn Powell – Bayleys Maiden pace. Pinseeker is trained and driven by Leeston horseman Jonny Cox for who part-owner Peter Brindson describes are a “bunch of golfers” that purchased the gelding off gavelhouse during a covid lockdown in early 2020. “We weren’t surprised he won, but surprised how he won! We couldn’t have wished for a better start, said Brindson. The three-year-old came from well off the pace with a devastating finish…
