All champions, in any sporting field, have had to start somewhere in life. Most do the ‘hard yards’. The ones that don’t end up ‘coodabeen champions’. Like it or not, you have to ‘earn your stripes’… And greyhounds are no different! I recall superstar Aston Rupee, at his sixth start, winning a Country Championship heat (450m) by 7.6L in 25.06sec (Best) at Shepparton almost a year ago. Two starts earlier, he had finished third to Music Event in the Listed Western Districts Derby. Aston Rupee went on to snare a $25,000…

Fisher is Sizzlin’
Lara-based greyhound racing stalwart Ron Fisher, 74, was doing a proverbial ‘Mexican hat dance’ after Sizzlin’ Sanchez showed ‘crackle’ at his 100th race start. Sizzlin’ Sanchez ($2.90F) scored a ‘frizzling’ 18th win (with 14 seconds and eight thirds) claiming a Grade 5 (390m) in 22.50sec at Warrnambool on December 27. Fisher could have tossed a ‘sombrero’ on the floor, such was the excitement, but he did well not to fling his well-worn cap into the air! The Sizzlin’ Sanchez-Ron Fisher ‘courtship’ commenced around four months prior to the Nov ’16 Kinloch…
Opal ‘Rocks’ into Australian Cup
Mario Briganti subscribes to the theory that if they’re good enough, they’re old enough, boldly throwing powerful youngster Big Opal Rocks in the deep end in the Group 1 TAB Australian Cup heats this Saturday. Big Opal Rocks was one of the star performers on the opening night of the Australian Cup Carnival at The Meadows last Saturday, claiming his fifth straight win in an Australian Cup preliminary. The hulking 35-kilogram son of Kinloch Brae and Red Rocks, which doesn’t turn two until June 13, clocked 29.75sec, just two lengths…
‘Tears’ dynasty continues to flow
Robert Britton has enjoyed phenomenal success in recent years with the progeny of Fernando Bale and Tears Siam, most notably with champion stayer Tornado Tears, as well as Group 1 winners Here’s Tears and Rippin’ Sam. Britton’s affinity with the potent ‘Tears’ line also includes Tears Siam’s litter brother Space Star, a three-time G1 winner and The Meadows 725m record holder. Britton is assured of adding another win at Geelong this afternoon, with Race 4, a 520m maiden, at 5.03pm, comprised entirely of six members of the fourth Fernando Bale…

PRISON GREYHOUND PROGRAM CELEBRATES 500TH FOSTER GRADUATE
Victoria’s Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) has reached a milestone with the 500th rehomed dog successfully completing foster care at the State’s HM Tarrengower Prison in Victoria’s Goldfields region. The 500th milestone reinforces the success of the GAP-Corrections Victoria Prison Pet Partnership program which sees up to four foster dogs at a time being placed within the prison system in preparation for their forever home. The program, which started in 2009 allows inmates to play a vital role in socialising greyhounds and preparing them ready for adoption. This includes familiarising them…

Carl Haas Snr – a greyhound racing ‘impresario’
Greyhound racing ‘jack-of-all-trades’ Carl Haas Snr has died. Haas passed away in his sleep in the early hours of Saturday morning, January 22 – three days after his 90th birthday. A stalwart of the sport, Haas was highly respected as a greyhound trainer and administrator, and bookmaker. Haas was raised in Malvern and attended Caulfield Grammar before following his father, Rudolf, into bookmaking. And it was as a ‘satchel swinger’ which proved a catalyst to his significant contribution to greyhound racing. “In late 1975, Dad bought a 42-acre property at…
