Gibbons ‘plays it straight’ at Healesville

Avalon’s ‘Team Gibbons’ could finally break their much-documented Group race ‘hoodoo’ after litter brothers Quinlan Bale and Nicolson Bale quinellaed the $15,250 Victorian Straight Track Championship final (350m) at Healesville on Sunday. It was a classic case of sibling rivalry, with Quinlan Bale ($3.30F) obtaining a $10,000 first prize and ‘bragging rights’ – but only just – over the fast-finishing Nicolson Bale ($3.40), which was seventh in the early stages. Both are trained by Daniel Gibbons, who walked away with $13,000 in 19.42sec courtesy of the Jun ’20 Feral Franky-Ethla…

‘Galo halo’ glowing at Healesville

Pampered GAP retiree Peter Galo enjoys the ‘life of Riley’, living in luxury on a 60-acre property at Ouyen. But during his racing heyday, Peter Galo was a Healesville cult idol. He amassed an incredible 47 victories – 24 at Healesville – and at one stage looked like he’d press his ‘uncle’, Stagger, for the Victorian wins record of 64. Peter Galo’s biggest win at Healesville was the 2019 Listed National Straight Track Championship on August 18 – establishing a new and still existing 350m track record (18.65sec). And three…

Dailly double?

Donning the ‘Big V’ is one of the highest honours in any of our sporting codes. So, it’s high stakes when the state finals of the National Sprint Championship (515m) and National Distance Championship (715m) are decided at Sandown Park on Thursday night. And it’s “Team Dailly” who holds the whip hand in the NSC state final and has an undeniable chance in the NDC state final. Both events carry a $12,000 first prize. They’ll launch a triple challenge in the Sprint final (Race 8, 8.37pm) with G1 Silver Chief…

Let the ‘Chase’ begin

Since its inception in 2018, no Victorian sprinter has won the Million Dollar Chase. But our chase to ultimately provide an ‘instant millionaire’ – in the second MDC edition for 2022 – starts at Temora on Wednesday with two regional heats over 457 metres. And, on numbers alone, the Vics have an excellent chance of a strong presence in the Temora regional final six days later. We have five of the seven runners in Heat 1 (Race 7, 5.32pm) and four of seven in Heat 2 (Race 8, 5.54pm). However,…

Removal of unplaced prizemoney at Warrnambool

Following recently announced increases to Victorian prizemoney and travel subsidies for the 2022-23 racing season, a review of the current race program and prizemoney structures has been undertaken to ensure a consistent and simplified approach. In June 2020, the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club commenced holding bottom-up graded 250+ rank limit Monday afternoon meetings to address uncertainty in the racing program caused by COVID-19 related Victorian travel restrictions and SA border closures. These meetings were added to the program to ensure opportunities to race were available for trainers and greyhounds particularly…
