Vics recognised at Nationals Awards

David Geall was named Australian Trainer of the Year at Greyhound Clubs Australia’s annual Nationals Awards in Sydney on Friday night. Geall, pictured above, had a stunning 2022 racing season, with highlights including winning the TAB Melbourne Cup with Koblenz and steering country cups king Ferdinand Boy to his 50th career victory. The Lara trainer was one of a number of Victorians recognised at the prestigious ceremony, which saw representatives from jurisdictions all over Australia in attendance ahead of Saturday night’s National Sprint and National Distance Grand Finals at Wentworth…

The Stir Up – Waterloo Cup Edition

GRV’s Andrew Copley, Peter Quilty and Gerard Guthrie discuss the prestigious 2022 Waterloo Cup ahead of Sunday’s final day at Lang Lang, which will incorporate the quarter finals, semi finals, and the $19,500 final.   Andrew  How good is the Waterloo Cup? Now in its 149th year, this race captured the imagination of sporting fans all over Victoria back in its heyday. Peter  Even I wasn’t around back then, but I love that coursing is still in existence, and is actually growing in popularity among the younger generation of trainers…

‘Astro’-nomical!

Old stager Blackpool Astro lines up for his 105th start in the Straights Veterans final (300m) – Race 4, 12.14pm – at Healesville on Sunday. The Jan ’18 Banjo Boy x Crackerjack Bale dog qualified for the $2500 to-the-winner final after finishing second to Lady Fabio in a heat last week. Prepared by Ian Beattie – a popular and regular figure at Healesville – Blackpool Astro won at his 100th start on August 7 at the picturesque Yarra Valley venue. The old-timer is a model of consistency with 16 wins, 24…

Shaw to ‘Master’ Waterloo Cup

James Shaw might only be a recent convert to coursing, but he finds himself in a position of great strength heading into Sunday’s decisive second day of competition in the Waterloo Cup at Lang Lang. The young Seymour trainer has three of the remaining six contenders vying for coursing’s most coveted trophy and the attractive $15,000 winner’s purse. Shaw, 32, is assured of at least one semi-finalist, with Zinzan Brooke x Alpha Nemesis litter sisters Crabby Yabby and Nine Nine to stage a ‘family feud’ in a quarter final. While…

He’s No Slouch – wow he’s fast!

National Coursing Association of Victoria president Peter Craig will be striving for his second Waterloo Cup when He’s No Slouch goes to the ‘slips’ at Lang Lang on Sunday. Craig won coursing’s ‘Holy Grail’ with Full Of Grace in 2014. He’s No Slouch won his first three rounds on Day One of the time-honoured event (now into its 149th year) last week and is into the quarter-finals. But with a ‘natural’ Bye, he’s effectively reached the semi-finals on Day Two. Ironically, He’s No Slouch has quickly earned a “wow he’s…

Gibbons strikes Straight Track gold

After enduring a frustrating wait to break a feature race hoodoo, the floodgates have burst open for rising training star Daniel Gibbons over the past fortnight. Gibbons, 33, has celebrated back-to-back feature victories at Healesville; firstly, preparing the quinella in the Victorian Straight Track Championship, with straight course revelation Quinlan Bale edging out litter brother Nicolson Bale. That ‘family finish’ saw the classy Feral Franky x Ethla Allen siblings qualify for Saturday morning’s Group 3 National Straight Track Championship final (324m) at Richmond, in Sydney’s west. “It took two and…

‘Little Suzie’ wake-up for NDC rivals

Meet the sport’s ‘bargain basement’ buy of the year – Moraine Suzie. Warrnambool owner Peter Byrne paid a paltry $2000 for the latest staying revelation after her 12th staying start. Byrne thought Moraine Suzie (May ’20 My Redeemer x Miss Bo Wicked) may get over more ground based on her breeding and his ‘crystal ball gazing’ has developed into an amazing prognostication. Following her purchase, Moraine Suzie was transferred to Lara trainer Brendan Pursell who didn’t waste any time stepping her up gradually in distance. Subsequently, Moraine Suzie has completed a…

Dusty road to National Sprint glory

The last time Sydney hosted the National Championships, in 2015, ‘Team Dailly’ claimed the Sprint Grand Final with the great Fernando Bale. It’s fair to say rapidly improving 2022 Group 1 National Sprint finalist Dusty Bourbski is no Fernando Bale, but trainer Tom Dailly is optimistic lightning could strike twice when the Nationals return to Wentworth Park on Saturday night. Dusty Bourbski (Box 2) occupies the fourth line of TAB’s market at $7, drawn between local favourites Simply Limelight (Box 1) and Good Odds Cash (Box 3), which head betting…
