Miracle on ‘Koroit Street’

Nullawarre hobby greyhound trainer Trevor Steel, 67, is hoping for a ‘miracle’ when Zara’s Princess contests tonight’s $7500 to-the-winner Mepunga Oaks final (450m) at Warrnambool. Zara’s Princess (Box 5) is the $51 outsider in the event – Race 8, 8.31pm – but it’s not the $7500 first prize that captivates Steel’s emotions. Back in 2015, Steel and wife Elizabeth reared a litter on a pup basis and named the pup Miracles Happen – now the mother of Zara’s Princess. Miracles Happen raced on 94 occasions for only four wins (three at…

Buddy’s Traralgon Cup ‘Paua’

Trainer Steve White is adopting a circumspect approach ahead of Bendigo Cup hero Paua Of Buddy’s much-anticipated return from injury in Friday night’s Group 2 SEN Track Traralgon Cup heats (395m). Paua Of Buddy hasn’t raced since brilliantly winning the G2 Bendigo Cup final on October 16, where he ran a near-record 23.29sec, only .01sec outside the 425m benchmark set in the heats by Typhoon Sammy. An untimely cut to a pastern forced Paua Of Buddy out of Melbourne Cup contention and the great-grandson of White’s champion Paua To Burn…

Déjà vu for Selkrig?

Astute Devon Meadows trainer Garry Selkrig vividly recalls the ‘salad days’ he enjoyed with his former stars Peter Galo, To The Galo’s and Stagger. At one stage, Selkrig targeted Peter Galo towards the Victorian record of 64 wins – ironically held by his ‘uncle’, Stagger. But the 2018 G2 Shepparton Cup winner retired with a career-ending injury with 47 wins in September 2020. Stagger won the 2012 G2 Warragul Cup and To The Galo’s – an older half-brother of Peter Galo – won 43 races including the 2016 Warragul Cup.…

Furey’s ‘Exquisite’ feeling

Meet the female “Clark Kent” of Victorian greyhound racing – Donna Furey. A budding ‘superwoman’ of the sport, if you’ll excuse the pun, Furey juggles greyhound training with her vocation as the Head of Microbiology at Australian Clinical Labs. RSN racecaller Victoria Shaw recently caught up with Pearcedale-based Furey and says her “understated and calm manner combined with her remarkable ‘other life’” left the impression she was a proverbial “Clark Kent”. Both of Furey’s greyhounds – She’s Exquisite and Nifty Nelly – won at Healesville from the ‘pink’ (Box 8)…

And three of our staying stars…
