A 10-race program has been assembled on Melbourne Cup Day in Perth at Ascot Racecourse, and HorseBetting’s WA racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for Tuesday’s action. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is out 13m for the entire course, and the first race is set to go at 11:33am AWST.
Ascot Best Bet – Arcadia Grace
In the sixth race of the afternoon, William Pike combines with Grant & Alana Williams aboard Arcadia Grace. The Hinchinbrook filly has had just three career starts, winning by 2.75 lengths on debut before flashing home in her next two starts, finishing seventh and sixth respectively. While she finished 4.5 lengths off the winner last time out, she comes out of a Listed race back into a Class 3, so she should relish the drop in grade. Drawn in barrier two with 54kg on her back, Pike should be able to use the gate to allow his mount to settle a touch closer over the 1400m journey this time. If she keeps touch in the running, she should be too good for these.
Next Best at Ascot – Trevern
In the last race of the day, we daresay punters will be gravitating to this four-year-old who is looking to make it three straight wins for his trainer Jim Taylor. Trevern has recorded impressive all-the-way wins in his past two starts at Northam, and there is no reason why he can’t add another victory to his resume here. Apprentice jockey Laqdar Ramoly partnered this gelding last time over 1100m in a Class 1, and his weight claim will again be advantageous. Drawn well in barrier three, Ramoly can take Trevern to the front in this 1200m and control the race. He is up in class, but he’s been winning well enough to suggest that he can go on with it now.
Best Value at Ascot – Hoi Ann
In the penultimate race, Roy Rogers and Shaun O’Donnell combine with dual Group 3-winning filly Hoi Ann. The three-year-old won both the Gimcrack Stakes and WA Sires’ Produce Stakes in the autumn, albeit by narrow margins, but that form is good enough to see her get back into the winner’s circle third-up. Hoi Ann has finished 11th in her two runs this spring, first over 1000m and the 1200m, so the return to 1400m should suit. It is also worth noting that in both runs so far this prep she has drawn the carpark, so jumping from barrier four on Tuesday will allow her to settle closer like she did in her Gimcrack win and not be left with too much work to do late. She can figure at big odds.
