An action-packed seven-race card awaits punters at Ascot on New Year’s Day, with the Group 2 Perth Cup set to headline the program on Wednesday. The track is expected to firm from the Soft 5 rating at acceptances to a Good 4 by the start of the meeting. The rail will be in the +6m position for the entire circuit, and the first race will jump at 3:37pm AWST.
Perth Cup tip: In Good Order
Following a strong run of performances since a four-week freshen in September, which saw In Good Order finish inside the top placing four times in five starts, the Daniel Morton-trained gelding recorded a deserving win in the Group 2 Ted Van Heemst Stakes last start. The son of American Pharoah settled midfield and received a great run in transit before peeling out to the middle of the track to finish off strongly. The rise in trip to 2400m should be no issue, and if he can settle in the first six, In Good Order can win again.

La Trice Classic tip: Own The Queen
Own The Queen has been nothing short of impressive in her two starts this preparation, when she flashed home from the back of the field first-up over 1400m and was just nabbed in the final stride after leading over 1600m. The Justine Erkelens-trained mare appears perfectly placed to strike third-up, as she finds a race where she is the only runner to have won over 1800m. With a blistering turn of foot at her disposal, Troy Turner can settle Own The Queen worse than midfield and finish off strongly in the final 400m to record a victory.

Best Bet at Ascot: Shmoov Moova
Shmoov Moova returned from a 16-week spell with a breathtaking 3.2-length victory at this track and distance, taking good learnings from his narrow defeat over 1200m in his only other start. The Simon Miller-prepared gelding was sent out as an odds-on favourite with top horse racing bookmakers, and the son of Territories didn’t let his supporters down as he let down with a rapid turn of foot to sprint away from his rivals late. Chris Parnham will be legged aboard this up-and-coming sprinter, and if he can get off the rail before the home turn, Shmoov Moova can bring up back-to-back victories.
