Ascot will host a huge nine-race program this Saturday as the Perth Summer Carnival continues for another week. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but like we saw last weekend, with the hot weather forecast for Perth, the track will dry out and we should be on a Good track come Saturday. The rail will be out in the +4m position on Saturday, which may play slightly favourable to on-speed runners.
The first race will jump at 12:28pm AWST.
Best Bet: Bitofmerit
Our best bet of the day will be Bitofmerit from the Michael Campbell yard, who has won four of her first six starts to begin her career and looks very hard to beat over 1000m in the RTG 72+. This daughter of Demerit will be third-up for this preparation after winning her first-up in impressive fashion and finishing second at her most recent start after sitting on-speed out of her comfort zone, proving to be her downfall. On Saturday, we should see Lucy Warwick take this girl to the rear of the field and let her get into a rhythm before working her way to the outside to let down with that customary booming turn of foot. There looks to be quite a bit of speed in this race with the likes of Acromantula, Deep Dive and Premium Choice looking for forward positions and like to race with the speed on. If the front three go at a good clip out in front, it will only favour this girl and will set up the race perfectly for her.
Best Bet
Race 4 – #4 Bitofmerit (7)
4yo Gelding | T: Michael Campbell | J: Lucy Warwick (57kg)
$2.50 with Bet365
Next Best Bet: Sentimental Hero
Sentimental Hero from the Michael Grantham yard was very unlucky last start where he finished third behind The Velvet Queen in the RTG 72+ on December 24. This gelding didn’t get much luck for most of the home straight before bursting through a gap to run third by half-a-length. If this son of Al Maher found clear air before the final 100m, he would have won, but he didn’t, so now that he rises to 1600m and gets a nice barrier of five, he will be in this race for a long way. Clint Johnston-Porter will get back aboard this gelding for the second time after he rode him to victory on debut at his only other ride. From the good barrier we should see Johnston-Porter settle this gelding in the one-one and with even luck, he will be lengthening nicely down the outside attempting to go a couple better second-up.
Next Best Bet
Race 6 – #7 Sentimental Hero (5)
5yo Gelding | T: Michael Grantham | J: Clint Johnston-Porter (56.5kg)
$3.10 with Neds
Best Value: Patchwork
We will be hoping to blast out in the final race of the day, where the Adam Durrant-trained mare Patchwork will be seeking back-to-back wins after she recorded a very nice win last start at Pinjarra over 1600m on December 26. This daughter of Helmet has been in good form this campaign, finishing in the top four at all four of her starts. Clint Johnston-Porter was successful on this girl last start and he will stick with her on Saturday, indicating to us that she is ready to continue her winning ways. From barrier 12, Johnston-Porter will have a few headaches about where she will settle in the running, but with a lack of speed in the race, we should see this girl push forward and settle in the first four. If she gets there without doing too much work, this mare will be in this race for a very long way.
